Drool-worthy nurseries!

Posted on February 17, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Domestic Goodness .

When our first was born we lived in a really cool apartment. It was the main floor of a big old Victorian home in a trendy neighbourhood. It had a great layout – there was a gorgeous den with an antique fireplace at the front, a really spacious octagonal bedroom (was probably once a pretty grand dining room) a roomy eat-in kitchen, and at the very back there was a little office with a door that opened out onto the little backyard.

When my husband and I agreed on the place we didn’t say it out loud, but we both knew that little back office would one day be the nursery.

And it was.

I found this gorgeous mid-century teak sideboard that was being put out to the trash one night as I was coming home, and my friend helped me drag it from the curb. Lots of drawers, I added a change pad and it was way cooler than any change table you’ve ever seen. We were given the family crib and a glider. My husband painted a feature wall “Maple Leafs Blue” and proceeded to create a chair-rail effect around the perimeter with hundreds of Hot Wheels cars.

I LOVED that place.

But I didn’t take the decor too seriously – I still don’t. Our place was funky and filled with great art – the nursery was totally our style – but sometimes I look at these nurseries that have been professionally designed and covet all of those pretty pieces. Other times I look at some of these nurseries – they’re so immaculate and sophisticated I wonder if the babies know they’re not allowed to have diaper explosions in there!

Check out these for some nursery inspiration. And if you want to steal my husband’s Hot Wheels effect, he says you should go for it!

I’m a girlie girl at heart and I love pink and purple. This nursery is a great mix of style and playful. The Novella Crib at Ella + Elliot is total eye candy! The feature wall is such a great way to create different areas of the room – if you’ve got a large enough space.

Leave it to RH Baby & Child (Restoration Hardware) to make me covet a nursery when I don’t even have a baby to put into a crib. Who am I kidding, if this crib came in king size, my master bedroom would look a lot like this.

Feeling a little French Provincial? AFK Fine Furniture for Children in LA has created some celeb rooms, and this one is fit for a little princess. Some may say “A little over the top” while others may say you simply don’t hold back on the sugar or the spice when it comes to everything nice for baby.

This nursery had me at the tufted crib and gold polka dots. And I’m a sucker for tassles!. I love that it’s kind of whimsical and juvenile yet full of serious style. This is one trendsetting infant! I have to admit I’m a bit of a Land of Nod junkie. I don’t think there’s anything they carry that I don’t love love love!

Straight outta the UK, Funky Little Darlings seriously lives up to its name! Can you even? I would never have even considered the £3,200price tag on that crib – but there’s something so completely amazing about the colour scheme for a little baby girl’s room. #Want (Actually, that darker shade is pretty close to my husband’s choice of “Maple Leaf Blue”).

Ooh la la! This modern French black-and-white nursery has luxe appeal and serious drama. Pottery Barn always has the best accessories – but those floors, I can’t help myself, I want those floors. And that chair. Who am I kidding, I want the curtains and rug too. This is one sophisticated little bébé, n’est pas?

Fresh. Modern. Playful. No, that’s not a three-sided crib, that would be crazy. Lusso Baby carries the Harlow, with acrylic slats so that the hipster baby you’re raising has an unobstructed view of the hand-woven artisan rug and the original one-of-a-kind flamingo stuffie from organic virgin cotton, which is, of course, the incarnation of the most ethical form of taxidermy.

Super adorbs while gender neutral, this cheerful little nursery has all the makings for a happy baby – and happy parents. Tell me you wouldn’t be happy snuggling in that comfy glider. The new line George Baby at Walmart has lots of new pieces offering that great combination of budget friendly and stylish!!!

How Pinterest Saved My Life(Style)

Posted on February 3, 2017 by Alexis Nicols Posted in The Best You, Urban Suburban Mommy .

Like many moms, I need help getting dressed in the morning. Not “one leg at a time” help, just gentle redirection so that I can put together an ensemble that doesn’t scream “poor you” or “laundry day.” When I was ready to go back to work after my second and last mat leave, I turned to social media for help. I decided to start a Pinterest board to help me find my style and get my general groove back.

Unfortunately, there were no boards titled “Outfits for Cray Mombies” or “What to Wear When You’re Currently Covered in Poop”, so I settled on “Casual Mom Outfits”. I’ve learned a lot about conserving time and money when trying to piece together a wardrobe on a budget. Here’s what Pinterest has taught me about fashion, style and sanity:

  1. I pick out my clothes the night before. I’m not kidding. You will save precious minutes getting dressed if you’re not standing in front of your closet with your mouth open trying to figure out what to wear. In fact, if possible, pick out your outfits for the week. One less thing to stress about, and you’ll avoid reaching for the same 10% of the closet that you always wear.
  1. I now work with what I’ve got. I have neither the funds nor the patience to start my wardrobe from scratch. Oh pretty please, can I stare at myself half-dressed and sweaty in a dressing room while garbage music thumps through the speakers, causing an aneurysm and resetting my heartbeat? The good news is that I have have a “tabula rasa” closet –full of neutral (black) pieces and endless possibility. Pinterest helped me pull together items I already had and reassembled them in new ways. For example, I saw this:

So I thought: Well, I have jeans and I have 500 black shirts. Add some fancy bracelets and a pair of flats and voila! It looks like I got dressed without having to smell my clothes first!

  1. I stopped spending tons of money on trends. Remember parachute pants? Shoulder Pads? Yeah, I’m still trying to forget. Trends can quickly become fads. And honestly, who can keep track? I’m still wearing a side ponytail. Rushing to keep up is a waste of time and money. Consider too that not every trend is right for every body type. Recently, I tried to rock the whole raw hem with ankle boots thing. It’s supposed to look like this:

I looked like a hobbit in dirty shrunken pants. Now, I keep trendy items to accessories.

  1. I skip sales. Unless you’ve found the one – that item you’ve been dying to get and has finally come out of the stratosphere and into your arms in your size and at an incredible discount – you won’t wear half of what you buy on sale. Volume is not value. If you figure out the cost per wear, you’ve actually spent more on a $10 shirt worn once than on a $100 sweater that you’ve worn a billion times. I used to do 85% of my shopping in January and July – the in-between seasons where everything is heavily discounted – and routinely wound up with things that were out of style by the time I got around to making those purchases useful. Now, I avoid Boxing Week like the plague and only shop Cyber Monday if there’s something I’ve had my eye on for more than 3 months.
  1. I know my digits. Not just my size (which varies from retailer to retailer) but my actual measurements. In addition to being a sadistic torment, knowing my bust, waist and hip measurements will ensure that I order the right size if (when) shopping online, especially if items are listed in European sizes (for example, a size EU37 translates to “Ha ha you wish” in its US equivalent.) It also prevents an accumulation of crap I can’t unload, and I hate returning online items.

Most moms have a decision threshold – after a certain amount of time, our ability to make decisions – good ones anyway – is drastically depleted. It’s called “decision fatigue”. For me, I can’t make executive decisions past 10:00 a.m. (lunch time is usually whatever I can find between the couch cushions.) It might sound corny using social media to dress myself, but if I can offload one more task, why wouldn’t I? If people can pin vision boards or outfits for their cat, why can’t I designate a board for personal style? I’ve become a better dresser and a better shopper, and that’s major value.

Me and my mid-century modern!

Posted on January 25, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Urban Suburban Mommy .

This week from The Modern Curator: Mid-century modern lighting, for a steal!

Seeing this little miss at the table, hard at play melted us! She’s got the perfect mid-century modern setting to get the creativity flowing.

Sputnik-Inspired Chandelier from Costco in stores.

Recently, my husband and I went shopping for a new light for our dining room. Our goal was to find something mid-century modern inspired with an artistic touch. I’m not sure if you have been lighting shopping lately, but we suffered from a bit of sticker shock when we discovered some of the prices! Then, we stumbled across the sputnik-inspired chandelier from Costco… of all places! We couldn’t believe the price was only $129 (easily $200 in savings, compared to other stores). We are thrilled with our purchase (and savings!) and find it’s the perfect art/light installation for our space. Here are seven more lighting options (some from places you might not expect!) that will add a hit of mid-century modern to your space and won’t break the bank.

Green envy

Posted on November 23, 2016 by Sara Duck Posted in The Best You .

We’re thrilled to introduce our newest contributor, Sara Duck. Each week this spectacular style maven brings us some inspiration. She’s got the eye for a great piece, the ability to pull together the perfect look – and it’s not limited to one area – so savour these ideas and add a bit of fun and flair to your world, whether it’s to your wardrobe, your work desk, a hostess gift, your child’s room – or really any room in your home! And to enjoy more of Sara’s style, visit TheModernCurator.ca

The colour green conjures up many memories for me. I can remember, endless summers trying to perfect cartwheels on freshly mowed green grass, at my family home. I think about the lush, vibrant, green palm trees lining the beach in Playa Rincón in the Dominican Republic. And, I also try to erase the memories of my mother trying to force me to eat (every child’s favourite vegetable), Brussel sprouts (gah!).

Do you have a favourite memory connected to the colour green? I’d love to hear about it! Green is definitely trending at the moment, especially the olive-green tone, it’s everywhere! And, I predict it to be Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017.

Managing your fro and frizz in the humidity

Posted on June 23, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

We all have those horrible hair days where humidity gets the best of us.

My hair turns into a huge frizzy mushroom head.

(Urban Mommy Elisa and Suburban Mommy Michelle chime in here to add a resounding ditto! Huge fro and frizz all around!)

Real Sexy Hey 😂😂😂😉

As a professional stylist I am always interested in finding new products that help hair perform its best. I’ve come across some great new products that we started to carry In our salon @kaboomhairsalon  called evo

I’m loving our new line!

I thought I would share a few of my favourites to battle those frizzy, big hair kind of days. I also have a couple of hair styling tips that should help you out on those hot summer days 😎

The Great Hydrator  Moisture Mask – Conditions, adds moisture, reduces frizz while greatly improving hair manageability

Happy Campers – Leave in moisturizer. Restores moisture and protects from the sun

Easy Tiger Straightening Balm – Tames curls and those fly always with weighted conditioning

Icon Welder – Helps protect hair form hot tools and humidity

Love Touch  Shine Spray – Helps protect from humidity and fight frizz

The Therapist – Calming shampoo and conditioner. Prevents fading colour, hydrates and moisturizes dry frizzy hair

And here are a few of the most popular looks for this summer. Taming the mane has never been easier than with these styles, even in the humidity:

Braids braids braids.  Love this look. Not only is it a great way to keep your out of control mane tucked away from the face it also is a softer pretty style that’s one of the hottest hair trends for summer 2016

Another hot hair trend that goes great with your bikini poolside, or perfect for a sexy date night is the tight and slicked back. It’s hot, clean and perfectly under control.😍👌🏻

Remember ladies, always  treat your hair like you treat your skin. With lots of moisture and love. ❤️

Parenting as a team. Who’s side are you on anyway?

Posted on June 2, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Urban Suburban Mommy .

It’s tough at the best of times to parent. It’s even tougher when there’s more than one of you.

Remember before you had kids? You had it all planned out in your head, and you knew exactly what kind of parent you were going to be, and how you were going to do that.

I remember.

photo: Newtown grafitti

photo: Newtown grafitti

And then, there were two. Two of you, and that meant you weren’t alone in your parenting decisions, styles, or ideas. As a parent, you instantly become one half of the team. Difficult for some, especially if you’re a take-charge kind of person, but if you’re going to parent successfully, it has to be done as a partnership.

Like marriage, parenting is teamwork, and like any team, you need to get to know your opponent so they become not only your ally, but your confidant, support system, and partner. It may be difficult to take a step back as commander and settle into the role of member, but remember who you’re doing it for, and the motives behind it. As a parent, your role is to empower, lead by example, and show a united front, so that your kids grow into confident, self-assured team-players themselves. So what’s important here, and how do you do that?

1. You’re a Partnership. Be A Partnership.

Before any partnership can be successful, you have to understand them. Learn about your partner’s parenting styles. Everyone has different ideas and styles, and at the end of the day, each of you will have something constructive, important and valuable to contribute. Make sure that your styles compliment each other. If some don’t, that’s okay, but talk about when a parenting style is ok to institute, and when not. If you’re not sure, discuss it. When it comes to consequencing, (not punishing, there’s ever a lesson in that), ensure you’re both on the same page for that particular incident or issue. Let your partner know how you’ve handled things, what was said, and what, if any, were the consequences. The last thing you want is to confuse your child. There should be no “well Mommy said”, or “Daddy said”… Be consistent. Don’t belittle your kids either, while you’re having your discussion with them. Always be thinking how you can fill their empowerment cups.

2. Create a Plan-Of-Action.

Before any action plan can work, there must be open communication. You’ve got to share the reigns now. That was a hard one for me. Being able to have a conversation about your parenting styles is tantamount. Discuss the 5-W’s of how you’re going to parent; What, Where, When, Why, Who, and How. Don’t forget to tag-team the other person if you’re not able to keep your cool or if things begin to escalate in your little one. You can also disengage, take a few minutes for your own time-out,  regroup, collect your wits, and come back. You’ll get more leverage out of of parenting this way, and you’ll also be teaching your child about emotional control and ownership of one’s emotions.

photo: Prachatai

photo: Prachatai

3. Agree to Disagree.

For some, this means taking that back seat and listening to what your partner has to say. Hear what they have to say, without being reactive. Nothing good ever came from impulse. Be considerate. Listen. Think, Consider. Acknowledge and validate.

You may not think at that moment, their ideas or how-to’s are amenable to you, so take it in, let it brew in your mind so you can respond in calm, and revisit. Let your partner know you respect their ideas, otherwise, you’ve lost even before things have begun. It’s great to be able to have a discussion about certain ideas, because often better ideas come to the surface. And, it’s another great bonding opportunity for you and your partner.

photo: Laurent Bartkowski

photo: Laurent Bartkowski

4. It’s all about the Compromise.

If you’ve agreed to disagree, in fact what you’ve inadvertently but constructively done, is create an open space for further discussion to compromise. Like marriage, it’s not about making concessions, succeeding everything, relenting, or just giving up. It’s about the journey. The compromise. Not only is this another great bonding opportunity for you and your partner, but you can actually work a lot out and learn about each other when you’ve learnt how to compromise, and have had an opportunity to see how it feels to be successful in that.  It’s what I call the “experience of the experience.” If you haven’t felt how good something feels, you won’t necessarily remember it when you need to.

Don’t forget to let all your caregivers know how you parent, so there’s even more consistency for you and your child(ren).
Happy Parenting!

How to tackle those stubborn greys or embrace them with Erica Wearing

Posted on May 19, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

There are some lucky ladies like myself who have to deal with stubborn grey hair.

Going to the salon every 3 weeks to get your roots done can be costly . To get you threw those next rough couple of weeks there are some great products that will mask those greys

Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Posder

Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder

This dry shampoo comes in four different shades.
There are also all different types of hair filler powders: hair chalk, hair sticks, hair mascara wands. All of these options could be found at drugstores or beauty supply stores

Some styling tips for masking the grey roots besides the cover ups

Try an off centre deep side sweep part or if your feeling like trying a new look ask your stylist to cut a fringe . These two styling tips are great because you don’t have one solid part line that screams “Hi! Look at these grey hairs popping out the top of my head!” 😉

shag blunt asym

Now if there are mommies out there that want to keep the grey and grow out there natural hair colour, there are ways to do it without having to look like Pepé Le Pew . Please go to your hairstylist and have them work their magic by stripping out the colour, getting you to the lightest shade of blonde. Hey why not try platinum blonde – maybe you will want to be a blonde bombshell for a while 💁. This will help the whole process; just blend way better then grey roots with dark brown ends.

silver long

long blondeAs for the Daddies out there, there’s nothing more sexy to me ten salt and pepper hair on a man. I know, I know, it’s not fair that men look distinguished and sexy with salt and pepper hair and when us ladies have shades of grey poking out our heads it’s frowned upon. If you dads want a bit of color brought back into your hair please see a professional. I have seen way too many men walking the streets with glowing auburn hot roots with dark brown ends 😝 . That’s a big no no!

My handsome husband rocking the salt and pepper 😍

Dressing boys can be fun – with celeb stylist Alissia Marciano

Posted on May 11, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved, The Best You .

Who says boys are no fun to dress?!
bow tie

Les Gamins G&R bow tie

Being a woman and a mom, I’ve always incorporated boyish elements into my code of dress.  So when I became a mother to two boys, it was a thrill for me to be able to create cool boy looks and drape them on my lovable, little monkeys.

It can be challenging to find stylish duds for little men. I do find that there is a lack of good options when i walk into independent kids clothing boutiques.

For high street stores like Zara Kids, they do have quite a good array of options when it comes to basics – ie: your skinny black jean, lowered crotch jeans and nice thin cotton t-shirts.   But when it comes to unique pieces to layer, it can seem like you have to search high and low before finding that perfect piece.  Here are a few designers and pointers that will make your fashion hunt a lot easier.

  1.  Remember not to shy away from fun patterns when dressing boys.  Mix and match and have a blast – after all you’re only a kid once. (I think…)
  2.  Kids can wear boy ties too!  A nice way to dress up a boys look for a special occasion or dinner out is by choosing a bow tie with a playful pattern. I really like skulls on little boys.  Check out the bow ties below.  My favorite label is Les Gamins G&R.  They are available online…get yours while they last!
  3.  Just like for women shoes are also a hot accessories for boys. They add personality to any little ensemble. Vans are definitely my go-to, but check out AKID as well for some great styles.
  4.  HAVE FUN – these petit munchkins won’t always let you style them so take advantage while you can!
