10 Questions with TV personality and fitness guru Tommy Europe

Posted on January 23, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in 10 Questions With, Fame & Fam .

When Elisa and I decided to take on wellness for the next 30 days, I thought about the people around me who inspire me to live well. TV star/trainer and dad Tommy Europe immediately came to mind.

I used to watch Tommy’s TV shows The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp and Bulging Brides avidly. In fact, when I had to squeeze into my wedding dress and only had a few months to go before the big day, I decided to enroll in a boot camp and it was the best decision I ever made.  Thanks Tommy!

So, I reached out to him (Tommy Europe – TE) to get his take on wellness so that he too could inspire you to live life to the fullest by exercising and making good choices.  Here is what he had to say:

1. What does wellness mean to you?

TE: Wellness means a lot of things. It means healthy living, nutrition, and doing things that you want to do.

2. Why do so many people fail at fitness regimes or sticking to a routine?

TE: I think a lot of people are unrealistic in terms of sticking to a routine. They try to take on too much, too fast. They focus on too much – they breakdown and ultimately, fail.  It so much better to start small.  Try going to the gym for 15 minutes to start and then increase the time, every day.  It’s about eating healthy too.

3. What advice can you give to jump start getting in shape?

TE: Focus on one thing. Commit to being active 3 days of the week. If you don’t like going to go to gym, try something else, but just make sure you move.  Try a boot camp, dance, group fitness. Recruit a friend so you can work out together. It will make you accountable.  Consider hiring a trainer.  You don’t need to work with a trainer five days a week but start.  He/she will also keep you accountable and spur you on.

4. What is your favorite kind of exercise?

TE: It varies.  I really like mixed martial arts.  In the gym, I like work outs that involve functional movement.  I am not concerned with how much weight is used but rather that the exercise is done properly.  Variety is super important so you don’t get bored.

Tommy Europe with his family on vacation

5. What exercises/workout can you recommend for busy parents?

TE: Get active with your kids. I have a 7 and a 5.5 year old and we make cleaning up their rooms fun, by incorporating lounges and squats. Just move.  Do what you like.

6. Do you think children can be part of your work out every day?

TE: It’s a great concept but I don’t think it’s possible do get a good work out with kids every single day.  You can certainly work your children into the workout on occasion.  For example, I take my kids to the gym the kids like to pull themselves on the suspensions while I am working out.  Take advantage of the time when kids are playing – even if it is 10-20 minutes and work out.

7. How is important is it to set fitness goals?

TE: If you want to be successful, you need to do it. When someone starts a business, they start with a business plan. You have to do the same with fitness and create a fitness plan.  You also need to work on your contingency plan. When you write down your goals, you can refer to them.  These goals will then be crucial to your success.

8. How fast can one expect results when working out?

TE: It really depends on how much time you spend working out.  It will take a lot longer to achieve your goals working out one day a week vs. 3-4 times a week.  It’s about how badly you want it.  This should all go into your fitness plan including how many sizes you want to drop as well as how many pounds.

9. Most important tip in the quest to getting in shape?

TE: Keep on going.  Everyone has good days and bad days.  Go for it. Be ready so you never have to get ready…

10. What should one look for a in a personal trainer/boot camp?

TE: Look for somebody who is motivated. Somebody who has your best interest in mind and will teach you something.  Somebody who can provide constant motivation, challenge you continuously and change it up  He/she should know where your coming from including your fitness background, and what you want to achieve.

Award-winning country music artist Jason Blaine on being a dad

Posted on June 17, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Fame & Fam .

Urban Suburban Mommy caught up with Jason Blaine. A great Canadian talent, he’s won awards and hit the charts – shaking things up on the country music scene. His current hit, Dance With My Daughter is a sweet song and says it all about “enjoying the now” because it goes too fast. Oh, how we can relate. With a sone and two daughters – and another addition on the way, we enjoyed his perspective on being a dad. Talking about parenting is always fun, it’s great to get to check in with a dad once in a while!
Jason Blaine

Jason Blaine

What is the best part about being a dad?

For me, the best part about being a dad is getting a chance to be a bit of a kid again as I play with them and see their joy as they live their childhood through all the special occasions, holidays, birthdays, vacations and fun firsts.
Imagine a 36-year-old Spiderman trick-or-treating with no children. Someone might yell, “go home, you’re drunk!”

Lol. If you’re a dad with kids trick-or-treating, it’s perfectly ok!

What would you like to receive this Father’s Day?

I’m on the road and away from my family on Father’s Day this year so all I would like for Father’s Day is to just get a phone call or a few minutes on FaceTime with them. Perhaps some messages on social media if anyone requests “Dance With My Daughter” for someone on the radio or CMT:)

with the fam

with the fam

Why did you write the song “Dance with My Daughter”?

I wrote “Dance With My Daughter” after my wife had signed my daughter and I up for our first Father-Daughter dance. I was really moved by the whole evening as I witnessed so many men being good Dads. As fathers, it’s so important to give our daughters a foundation of love and respect to show a little princess how a lady should be treated – so that one day she can recognize those qualities in the good man she chooses to share her life and raise her own daughters with.

What’s the hardest part about being on the road?

The hardest part about being on the road is simply being away from my family. I’ve missed a few things – not many – but I do get a case of career-dad-guilt from time to time. That said, I know that part of being a responsible parent is putting the work in so that we can enjoy those fun times and so that they can feel safe knowing they are taken care of.

What’s the funniest thing your children have done?

There are so many funny moments with our kids but the one that comes to mind at the moment is the time our three-year-old daughter, Sara, had completely demolished her bedroom, it was a mess! She was standing in the ruins holding her two soft monkey dolls when she looked up at us and quietly said, “The monkeys did it.”

What is your proudest dad moment?

My proudest moment as a parent so far has been when our three kids came up with the idea to put together a care basket for one of the homeless people in Nashville. We watched, with our hearts bursting, as they handed it to them and thought that there is no greater personality trait than that of compassion.

From Pembroke, Ontario, Jason Blaine won CMT’s talent search: Project Discovery in 2002. He released his first hit within the year and has had an impressive 6 albums with numerous singles, videos, awards and nominations. This country music star has a clear handle on parenting and a lovely family as his muse. He also does a lot of giving back, supporting several causes and organizations.

A picnic fit for a queen

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II photo: PolizeiBerlin

While we’re not your typical obsessed Royal watchers, we’ve got to admit that there’s something enchanting about the fairytale family, and we wish Her Majesty a very happy 90th birthday.

Carolyn Robb, was the personal chef to the Royal Family for a decade. She fed Prince Charles and Lady Diana when Harry and William were just little princes that enamoured the world. Robb shared some of the  favourite Royal dishes – and she’s got the inside scoop on the royal faves. So to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, we recommend this picnic of dishes created by Robb. These dishes are perfect for packing up and literally fit for a Queen!

The menu – click on any of the descriptions for the full recipe:

SALAD OF PROSCUITTO-WRAPPED PEACHES WITH FIGS & BUFFALO MOZZARELLA: This is a wonderful way to begin a picnic and the salad can be presented in a salad bowl or in a box for ease of packing and transporting it.

CURRIED CHICKEN SALAD WITH FRESH MANGO & TOASTED CASHEWS: 'Coronation chicken' was originally created to celebrate HM The Queen's coronation in 1953. This recipe is my interpretation of the dish and what better recipe to use for a picnic in her Majesty's 90th birthday year!

ASPARAGUS, SWISS CHARD & GOATS CHEESE TART: This tart is a must for a picnic; accompanied by a simple salad and minted new potatoes. SODA BREAD: I made this bread almost every day during my years as a royal chef. It is very quick and simple to make and I don't think you will find a more delicious loaf than this. It is best eaten freshly baked, but makes really good toast on day two. If it comes out of the oven just before you go on your picnic you can wrap it in baking parchment and a tea-towel to keep it warm!

And the Oscar for Best Hair goes to…

Posted on March 1, 2016 by ericahwearing Posted in Fame & Fam, The Best You .
FEATURE rooney mara

rooney mara on the red carpet And the winner for best hair  goes to Rooney Mara. She looked absolutely stunning . I loved the trio of slicked sculpted buns that flowed down her neck paired with her stunning smokey eyes and a bold red lips 💋
A slick up do with punk rock makeup and Givenchy Haute Couture dress. She’s definitely won the Oscar in my eyes.

You may know Mara for her stellar performance in Carol, which was nominated for many awards, including Best Supporting Role for Mara. Two years ago she was nominated for Best Actress for playing Lisbeth in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. From slasher films like Urban Legends to Nightmare on Elm Street, Mara is a versatile actress with a formidable career – AND great hair!

Oscars Red Carpet Watch by Erica Wearing

Posted on February 27, 2016 by ericahwearing Posted in Fame & Fam .

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again – The Oscars are this Sunday.  I always keep my eye out for celebrity trendsetters and classic beauties on the red carpet who win the best awards for hair in my opinion.

I’m loving the looks I have been seeing for the awards shows so far in 2016.  The simplicity of just a slicked polished top knot or a clean part with smooth long blunt hair or a fresh chopped bob with blunt bangs makes such a statement yet so classic and simple . I love how elegant this looks. I keep referring to simple  because these styles are not over done yet so beautiful .

I think my favorite is the slicked look.

What do you need to do it?  Some high gloss polish, a flat iron and a clean part are great tips to achieve these looks.

Also still on the red carpet, we are seeing the Hollywood classic wave with more of a beachy vibe too it.

All of these styles are simple, sexy and classic that we can wear everyday or pair with a glamorous dress.

Looking forward to seeing what the stars will be rocking this weekend for the Oscars!

And straight from the red carpet, we’ve got some really interesting stats from Wallethub.com:

  • 2%: Of Academy Awards voters are Black (vs. 13.2% of the population)
  • 25 Years Old: Jennifer Lawrence is the youngest person ever to earn four acting nominations
  • $3,500: Average cost of preparing a Hollywood actress for the red carpet
  • $220K: Value of the 2016 Oscar Swag Bag
  • 39 Years: Between Sylvester Stallone’s two Oscar nominations for his portrayal of Rocky Balboa
  • 45 Sec: The amount to which acceptance speeches will be cut down this year, thanks to individual shout outs scrolling on the bottom of the screen.

A lesson in food with Registered Dietitian Abbey Sharp

Posted on February 26, 2016 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Domestic Goodness, Fame & Fam .

Food writer, blogger and Registered Dietitian, we caught up with the ever-so-chic Abbey Sharp to ask her the questions you know you want to know about what we really should be eating.

What are super foods?

I think they’re foods that some marketer or self professed “nutrition expert” decided instantly makes a dish healthy.

It’s a buzz word. It’s a health halo. It’s unfortunately not real.

No one food has the ability to promote good health, or bad health. And even these so-called super foods can appear in dishes that aren’t otherwise well balanced. Wild blueberry donuts are still deep fried sugar bombs. I think we need to stop labeling foods in general, but the term super food is one you won’t generally hear me use.

What 5 foods should every household have as nutritious staples?

I don’t think there are 5 universal foods for everyone, because we all have different likes, cultural practices and dietary needs. But some of my go to staples are : canned or dried beans and legumes, balsamic (or another flavourful) vinegar, plain Greek yogurt, oats, eggs.

STUDIO-13

Abbey Sharp

So many women – especially moms – struggle with losing weight. Any advice on what to do and what not to do?

My first suggestion is to look at your motivation. Why do you want to lose weight? Most people would suggest that they want to live longer, be stronger, reduce the risk of disease and live a healthier life.

Well, you can do all of that without the scale ever budging.

Healthy eating and activity can promote health at any size. You may lose weight if you start to be more active, or if you start to eat a little more fresh produce, but the key to long term success is to change the goal to health, not weight loss.

Research also tells us that dieting doesn’t work. When we restrict our intake, we tend to feel so deprived that the moment we have access to some sort of “forbidden” food, we binge, we feel guilty, then we start the restriction cycle all over again – but even more stringently. The key is to just not get started down that path in the first place. Rather than focusing on restricting, I recommend a technique called mindful eating. It involves listening to your body and nourishing it as it needs. ABBEY-10There’s no depriving, there’s no moral weight assigned to foods – or you for eating those foods. You just eat what you want, start when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.

If the thought of letting go of the control scares you and you’re convinced you’ll just go crazy and gain a bunch of weight, keep in mind that as soon as you give yourself permission to eat without guilt or fear of future denial, the desire to go overboard on any food will disappear and you will just focus on eating to feel strong, nourished and satisfied. Research tells us, mindful eating and having a healthy relationship with food is the secret to long term success.

When a mom is shopping at the grocery store, what ingredients should she be concerned about when buying food for her family?

When reading nutrition labels and comparing like products, I would aim to choose those with higher amounts of protein and fibre, and lower amounts of salt and sugar. Also, don’t be lured in by claims on the front of packages – they are technically true, but there are a lot of tricks that marketers use to make their product seem healthier than it may be. The back of the package has the facts, so always reference that.

As for ingredients, I would stay away from hydrogenated oils altogether, and try to limit an excess of added sugars, which can be identified by the suffix “ose” (sucrose, fructose, maltose etc.). Ideally, look for products with relatively short ingredient lists. For example, I would rather buy plain yogurt where the only ingredients are milk, and maybe some probiotics and added nutrients and where I had the option to add my own fruit or sugar, than a flavoured yogurt that has sugar, colours and other stabilizers. There are exceptions, and there is no question that some added ingredients can make getting dinner on the table easier and more likely, but when time permits, go simple and build from there.

What is your favourite part about being a Registered Dietician?

Well, I’m definitely a different breed of RD. I work only in media, so I do a lot of TV and writing, which I love. My favourite part of my job is definitely communicating nutrition to the masses in my YouTube channel and on TV, trying to make it fun, and hopefully debunking the myths out there perpetuated by unqualified “nutrition experts”. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be as complicated as the media tries to make it. Listen to your body, move your body, nourish your body and do what feels good.

Alissia Marciano’s 5 fave looks this week for mamas

Posted on January 27, 2016 by venicealissia Posted in Fame & Fam, The Best You .

I’ve lived in Venice for a quite few years now and love the vibe and cool boutiques it has to offer.

And of course the proximity to the beach!!

I am always on the go, whether it’s going to art galleries with my boys, surf lessons, swimming lessons, preschool – and the list goes on.

Despite having a hectic schedule, it’s important to me to be well put together. One of my favorite shops in Venice is Guild.  It’s an amazing clothing boutique found at 1335 Abbott Kinney Blvd.  A definite destination when you’re in LA.

It’s no secret that I have always been a fan of my black leather jackets and rock’n’roll tees. I thought I would put together 5 looks from Guild that can take you from art gallery to romantic dinner incorporating my old standby favorites. Here are a few looks that I love incorporating my must have pieces for easy, effortless rock’n’roll style.

Look #1: Let’s spend the night together

This is a great look that can start any day of the week off, and also end the night off having a cocktail at the bar. The leather skinny black pants give it that perfect sexy rock’n’roll vibe, along with the vintage-inspired Rolling Stones Tee.  Pair it like I did, with canvas Bensimon’s and a plaid shirt with a comfy black cardigan during the day.  But when it’s cocktail hour, throw off your sneakers, tie the plaid shirt around your waist, take off your cardigan layer on some silver bangles and cuffs along with a high pair of heels, and you’re good to go!

Alissia Marciano OOTD plaid shirt

  • Made Worn Rolling Stones T-shirt
  • Frame’ Skinny leather jeans
  • Organic by John Patrick black cardigan
  • Pharaoh plaid shirt
  • Bensimon runners (Alissia’s own)
  • All clothing found at Guild 1335 Abbott Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA

Look #2: Mystery woman

It’s always nice to have a little air of mystery. You never want to fully divulge everything:) Isn’t that a woman’s and mother’s secret to keeping the spark alive?! An oversized hat says that quite nicely as well as protects you from the outdoor elements – whether it’s the sun or chilly air. This is a great neutral look in army green tones, and by adding a red lip you will get a nice pop of color. For the day, add a pair of ridding boots and a tight white t-shirt to give it that equestrian-inspired feel, and by simply adding a pair of heels and cream camisole take it into the evening for date night.

Alissia Marciano OOTD jacket and hat in chair

  • Haider Ackermann Cropped Jacket
  • Pharaoh pants
  • Gladys Tamez Millinery Hat
  • All clothing found at Guild 1335 Abbott Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA

Look #3: Apres surf Baja hoodie

For all you active mamas out there – and I hope with my recent articles that I have inspired a few more of you to get outside and experience the great outdoors – this look is the perfect apres surf or outdoor activity pull over. If you live in a warmer climate like I do in Venice, CA, then you can throw it over your bathing suit and slip on a pair of vintage Levi’s denim shorts. Or pair it with a skinny pair of black jeans and canvas sneakers to complete this casual Baja California inspired look.

Alissia Marciano OOTD shorts on chair

PS: Those knee bruises are the real deal, care of a day at the skate park!

  • KozaBaja Hoodie
  • Hoodie from Guild 1335 Abbott Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA

Giulian (Alissia’s son) wearing: all his own clothes

  • Harley Davidson leather jacket
  • Junk Food Grateful Dead vintage inspired t-shirt
  • JNBY jeans
  • Vans kitty runners

Look #4: ‘Jumpsuiting’ with the boys

This is the most comfortable and effortless look to throw on for whatever is thrown at you during your day. I am huge fan of all things denim – but maybe I’m a little partial to denim due to my Canadian roots and love of the ‘Canadian Tuxedo’.  Instead of jeans, try a denim jumpsuit to refresh your wardrobe while staying on trend this season.

Alissia Marciano OOTD denim and hat with son

  • 6397 Denim jumpsuit
  • Reinhard Plank Hat

Look #5: It was just a kiss

It’s important to get dressed up at least once a week and be in touch with your feminine side.  A sexy short cocktail dress will always do the trick. I love wearing shorter hemlines and showing off my legs even when – yes – I have evidence of a skateboarding accident on my knee.  It keeps it real and reminds me that I am a mom on the go with two boys in tow:)

While I like dressing femininely I also like to add a little edge to my look. I often wear a black leather jacket to complete my looks, whether it’s pairing it with denim or a silky cocktail dress. A silver clutch and black pointy shoes with a unique heel completes the style I am going for.

Chef Mike Ward dishes about food and parenting

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Chef and Kin Community host Mike Ward about cooking and parenting.  Mike is a daddy to 2 beautiful girls. We asked the 10 questions that you know you want to ask a chef about cooking for the kids. Find out about developing their palates without driving yourself crazy, and check out his awesome video below – who doesn’t love mash potatoes!

1. What’s more difficult being a chef or a parent?

Can I choose both? I think whether you’re a professionally trained cook or not, making meals for kids is really one of the hardest things about parenting. Being a chef you certainly get to choose the level with which you challenge yourself, that’s an option you don’t have as a parent.

So, the serious answer would have to be parenting.

2. What type of chef would you describe yourself as? What type of cooking do you prefer?

I would certainly describe myself as having a sense of humour towards cooking and food. We’re making food here, if I screw something up nobody gets killed. I think you can tell when a chef is taking them self too seriously in the food they make. I want to eat food that makes me smile, not serious dishes that are designed to technically impress and leave me in awe of those that prepared them.

3. At what age do you think you can start teaching the kiddos how to cook?

I think you can teach kids about flavour combinations from the moment they can communicate. They may not have the ability to handle sharp knives or hot pans, but most of cooking is understanding and exploring flavour combinations. It doesn’t require technical prowess to make a great sandwich or salad, but there’s still much learning that can be had with such simple dishes.

4. Why do you love cooking with your children?

Most of all, they’ll typically try what they make so that’s always a good thing! It’s also enjoying the sense of achievement and enthusiasm they have when they create something. Obviously, it’s not just applicable to cooking, but cooking is something that I enjoy so it’s lovely to be able to share that with them.

5. What are your thoughts on parents who spend time packing lunches that are bento-style – cutting sandwiches with cooking cutters to get rid of the crusts for example?

I have nothing but admiration because I don’t have the patience for that.

6. How do you convert kids who are picky eaters?

I don’t believe in so much converting kids, more approaching it as a process of expansion and learning. I know hundreds of adults that will openly express their dislike for foods they’ve never tasted. When my kids were very young, they both had a terrible fear of bugs, any small bug. What I would do is create little stories around these bugs, give them a name, tell them about their family, their kids. All of a suddenly they didn’t see them as bugs, they were lovely interesting little characters. Charlotte’s Web had millions of kids falling in love with spiders – I try to do the same with food. I’ll talk about how it’s grown, its flavour, its texture. If I can remove their established expectations then at least they might try it.

7. What is your favourite dish to make for your kids?

I don’t really have a favourite. The moment I can get them to like a particular flavour or texture I’ll immediately shift it slightly try to expand their palate even more. Right now we’re having fun with salty things, I’ve got them enjoying all olives and capers. I ultimately want them to think of food as one of life’s greatest joys. It’s not about consumption for energy, it’s about exploring and celebrating.

8. What are staples/must-have ingredients that every family should have in their home?

I am often asked that question and I’ve come to the conclusion that my list changes. Obviously things like onions, garlic and spices are often used. Right now sweet potato is often on my list: perfect roasted, great for soups, even used the next day in salads. I’m also a fan of flavourful greens, arugula, watercress. And eggs.

9. How do you help children develop a diverse palate?

The truth is that some kids are just immensely fussy and there’s nothing parents can do to change it. I do believe that kids can expand their palates with exposure to different flavours and textures but they’re also ultimately little human beings with their own likes and dislikes. I do believe in giving them a range with which to choose what they want to eat, we have that as adults, they should be allowed to have that as kids.

10. What advice can you give to moms or dads who are intimated by the kitchen and rely mostly on take-out food or uber-simple dishes?

Cooking is like anything else, if you start out of the gate with lofty expectations you will fail and be disheartened. Not unlike kids, if you try cooking simple dishes within your reach, that will give you confidence to push your boundaries slightly. Before you know it I guarantee what was once a chore can become a loved pastime. Also I love encouraging people to cook for others. Even after all these years nothing brings me more joy than feeding friends and family a satisfying meal.
