The bath bombers

Posted on August 22, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

My boys are addicted to bath bombs, and I’m okay with that.

Stinky boys + Lush bath bombs = Happy Mama

If your kids have ever given you the run-around because they don’t want to take a bath, I highly recommend taking them out to pick up a few bath bombs. I love the ones at Lush. I have tried other types, but I’ve never found better. I especially love Lush for their amazing quality, natural products that are never tested on animals and their social responsibility. But mostly because the products are so pretty, smell so good and work so well!

Yoga Bomb - that was my little guy's choice. I love that it has soothing and relaxing qualities. All he cared about was the way the Lush cosmetician described it like a jaw breaker with layers and layers of different colours!

For the uninitiated, bath bombs are essential-oil-and-magic-filled balls of bright colour. They smell lovely and are chalky to the touch, but drop them in water and they become effervescent as they react. They spin and fizz, emitting colours and aromas to sooth the soul. The water takes on gorgeous hues and sometimes – if you pick just right, they release flower petals, sparkles and other wonderful surprises as they do their thing.

It’s the perfect kind of fun to get your kids begging for baths!

Most bath bombs area  one-time use. They melt away completely as they finish fizzing. Warning – they will leave your child (and you) smelling better than any soap ever could, filling the bathroom and hallway with an incredible aroma. The essential oils are picked with precision and awareness. You can buy bath bombs for bedtime that relax, ones that soothe, ones that remind you of the forest, ones that invigorate, and ones that offer a pick-me-up. The happy, energizing scents are especially perfect for a cool, mid-day bird bath in the summer.

If you’ve never experienced the bird bath, then you need to start. My university roommate Jen, the loveliest of souls, not only turned me onto Lush products and bath bombs, but I believe she also coined the term bird bath.

Mystical and refreshing, Dragon's Egg is my personal fave and a regular pick for my boys. Its layers of colours and glitter bombing are both refreshing and invigorating!

Some baths are meant to be long and luxurious, where you need to reheat the water two or three times. Other baths are fast, soothing – not much more than a quick rinse. Bird baths. You pop into the tub for two or three minutes. Sometimes to wash up, other times just to cool off in the summer.

Titsy Totsy will fill a bath with the scent of romance and some lovely petals too

Titsy Totsy is meant for mama and will fill a bath with the scent of romance and some lovely rose petals too

Jen and I lived with two male roommates that joked they could never have imagined their bathroom would smell so good or be used so much, but I believe the landlord was probably having conniptions about the water bills!

Managing your child’s fear of dogs

Posted on August 12, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Struggle is Real .

There are plenty of people – kids and adults – that have a fear of dogs. Whether it’s a bad experience or just an innate phobia, having a fear of dogs can really impact life, especially as a child. Urban Suburban Mommy spoke with Koryn Greenspan, CEO, handler and Walker of Urban Dog Walks.  Here is her professional advice as to what to do, what not to do and how to perpetuate positive change.
Koryn with her clients

Koryn with her clients

Few things are more truthful than seeing a child’s sheer terror or gripping fear of a dog. It breaks my heart every time. My niece was TERRIFIED of my husky/shep/collie. Clients have told stories of their paralysis around dogs due to their own personal fear as kids. In addition, I have worked hand in hand with families whose very own children were petrified at the mere thought of brining a 7 week old puppy into their home.

After years of working with dogs, and seeing various degrees of this scenario play out, I have good news … This fear, although very real, is also very fixable.

Top 10 Tips On How To Break Your Child’s Fear of Dogs:

#1Try not to shrug off this fear by suggesting that the doggie is friendly while at the same time nudging them towards a dog. YOU know and trust that dogs are beautiful animals whose primary goal is to illicit happiness and positive praise from their owner and those who are around them. Your child, however, has yet to come to that understanding, and if forced (although with good intent*) towards the dog, before he or she has time to process and change their mind, may never be able to break their fear.

#2: Take the time to talk to your child and understand where the fear is coming from. While in the understanding process, try to limit their contact with dogs just for the time being. For all you know it could something as simple as the movement of their tail OR on the other end of the spectrum, it could be a dog’s teeth and fear of bite. Whatever the cause is, if you understand it you will have a better chance of managing the exact fear when it actually occurs.

#3: Be sure never to let a dog barge at them while walking into a front door, while walking outside or while in a park.

#4: If you are going to a friend’s house, request that the dog be outside or on a leash when you get there. If you are at a park and you see a dog in the distance off leash, steer your child away from that space. If you’re walking on the street and you spot a really hyper dog who wants to jump to say hi, simply take the time to cross the road. Remember these are not forever instances; these are for the time solutions until the fear of dogs has subsided.

#5: Once the root of the fear is understood and clearly communicated, start with leash / waist training exposure. If your dog OR a dog whom you are going to see is attached to your waist on a leash, slow integration can begin.

#6: When a dog is on leash and your child is present, praise the dog for the good behaviour – and it is paramount to reassure the child that they too are doing a great job!! Remember, this is a controlled environment and your child trusts YOU. Show them your confidence and loving interaction with the dog. Be sure to maintain a distance between the dog and your child and try to go about your business as best as you can.

#7: Off leash areas. There is a great opportunity for you and your child to be in close proximity to dogs while at the same time being protected by a fence. Take your child to these parks. Let them find their own comfortable space to sit or stand and watch the dogs from the outside. They will be able to see how they interact with each other as well as with their humans. First hand exposure is the key to their understanding of how dogs work and this will help to allow them to witness how loving, playful & caring dogs really are.

#8: Book a play date in a controlled environment where there can be space between your child and the dog. Take a walk with a friend who has a dog or go to a pet friendly leashed environment and have your child watch a puppy class, or anything that will show them firsthand  how patient, sweet and loyal dogs are.

#9: Educate your child on what to do if they are scared, or if a dog jumps, or if a puppy nips at their hands or ankles. Give them knowledge about what to do. Show them how to, with the use of positive reinforcement, manage and control their interactions with puppies and dogs. You would be surprised how much comfort comes from knowing what to do in scary situations. Arm them with the tools they need so they can move forward and start to build trust in dogs.

#10: Above all else, be patient, understanding and respectful of your child’s fear. It is an immense opportunity to give your child the gift of that special kind of love, loyalty and care that dogs are truly meant to give.*

The best summer hair and beauty regime tips and products

Posted on July 28, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

Summer is here and there’s nothing more I love to do then head to the beach or lay around poolside – okay, now I’m getting carried away. There is no lying around poolside with my two year old son 😏😉
Erica Wearing – under a hat, taking her own good advice.

Erica Wearing – under a hat, taking her own good advice.

There are a few essential items I like to carry with me in my beach bag, the most important of which are sunblock, beach towels, water, snacks. There is also is a very important hair care product tucked away in there also – that is hair sunscreen. Most are easy to apply, just spritz it on throughout the day. This will help your hair from becoming brittle and dry, and also help colour from fading.

Here are a few to try that won’t leave your hair feeling greasy:

Wella Sun
Paul Mitchell Sun Shield Conditioning Spray
AVEDA Sun Care

Pureology Essential Repair

When soaking your self in the pool, the last thing you want to do is destroy the beautiful hair colour you just had freshened up for the summer. If your going to go under water these are the tips you need to follow or you will be left with a lovely green tint and can kiss that $$$ beautiful blonde hair goodbye!

  • Always pre rinse hair. This will act like a shield and helps slow the absorption of chlorine.
  • Use a leave in conditioner or spray in conditioner.
  • Oil based or silicone hair products. This will help protect your strands while leaving them hydrated
Davines Absolute Beautifying Potion
Moroccanoil Light Oil Treatment
EVO Day of Grace

EVO Happy Camper

Some great shampoos for chlorine removal and product build up are:

Malibu Swimmers Wellness
AVEDA Sun Care
Kevin.Murphy Repair-Me.Wash

And great hair treatments and masks for after sun and beach/pool hair care:

AVEDA Sun Care
Pureology Hydrate Hydra Whip
Davines Nourishing Hair Building Pack

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask

Hydrate and protect your hair from the sun just as you would protect your skin. Wear a hat – that will definitely help colour from fading, and most importantly, wrinkles!

Have fun splashing around 😎🍸🌊

Tourist in my own city: Vancouver

Posted on July 22, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Bon Voyage .

I was born and raised in Coquitlam, British Columbia  and for the last 15 years have been living downtown Vancouver. I absolutely love it!

Vancouver is one big awesome playground.  Here are some of my favorite spots that are definitely worth a visit!

1.Stanley Park

future_feature

Vancouver.ca

You most check it out – not only is it world renowned it is a must see for tourists.

There is so much to do whether you live in Vancouver or are visiting. Take a dip in the Second Beach Pool, check out the exotic fish in the Aquarium, let the kiddies splash around in the water park.  You can bike or walk the sea wall and just take in the beautiful scenery.

2. Science World

This place is perfect for kids and adults alike who like discovering and exploring. Science World is a “science centre” with hundreds of interactive exhibits. How cool is the architecture of this building?

3. Playland at the PNE

This is the oldest amusement park in Canada and is located in Hastings Park.  If you are a thrill-seeker, you must check out the newest ride The Beast. I may sit this one out and stick to the kiddie rides!

4. Maplewood Farms

gaothillpic

Located about 20 minutes north of Vancouver, this is a great place for families.  After you visit with the animals on the farm, you can enjoy a picnic in one of the Maplewood’s many covered areas.

5. Great Beaches

Vancouver is known for its fab beaches and there are so many to choose from – some of my favs are Spanish Banks, Kitsilano Beach and English Bay.

In fact, in addition to our beaches we have plenty of water parks and wading pools, I suggest visiting Vancouver.ca for more information.

6. Best Ice Cream Shops

ice cream

bitesofvancouver.com

Yes I had to add ice cream to my list. Doesn’t everyone want to delight in a delicious treat? I highly recommend:

  • Earnest ice cream – there are two locations – one on Fraser Street and another on Quebec Street. In earnest, your tummy will thank you.
  • Rain or Shine – their delish ice cream is made with fresh, homemade and sustainable ingredients.  They have awesome flavors like honey lavender.
  • La Casa Gelato – so many yummy flavors to choose from – this retro shop is located just east of Strathcona Park.

I love Vancouver – this is only a partial list of awesome things to do!  When you venture outside of the city, there are even more great little gems to discover including Whistler. Enjoy and have fun!

Award-winning country music artist Jason Blaine on being a dad

Posted on June 17, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Fame & Fam .

Urban Suburban Mommy caught up with Jason Blaine. A great Canadian talent, he’s won awards and hit the charts – shaking things up on the country music scene. His current hit, Dance With My Daughter is a sweet song and says it all about “enjoying the now” because it goes too fast. Oh, how we can relate. With a sone and two daughters – and another addition on the way, we enjoyed his perspective on being a dad. Talking about parenting is always fun, it’s great to get to check in with a dad once in a while!
Jason Blaine

Jason Blaine

What is the best part about being a dad?

For me, the best part about being a dad is getting a chance to be a bit of a kid again as I play with them and see their joy as they live their childhood through all the special occasions, holidays, birthdays, vacations and fun firsts.
Imagine a 36-year-old Spiderman trick-or-treating with no children. Someone might yell, “go home, you’re drunk!”

Lol. If you’re a dad with kids trick-or-treating, it’s perfectly ok!

What would you like to receive this Father’s Day?

I’m on the road and away from my family on Father’s Day this year so all I would like for Father’s Day is to just get a phone call or a few minutes on FaceTime with them. Perhaps some messages on social media if anyone requests “Dance With My Daughter” for someone on the radio or CMT:)

with the fam

with the fam

Why did you write the song “Dance with My Daughter”?

I wrote “Dance With My Daughter” after my wife had signed my daughter and I up for our first Father-Daughter dance. I was really moved by the whole evening as I witnessed so many men being good Dads. As fathers, it’s so important to give our daughters a foundation of love and respect to show a little princess how a lady should be treated – so that one day she can recognize those qualities in the good man she chooses to share her life and raise her own daughters with.

What’s the hardest part about being on the road?

The hardest part about being on the road is simply being away from my family. I’ve missed a few things – not many – but I do get a case of career-dad-guilt from time to time. That said, I know that part of being a responsible parent is putting the work in so that we can enjoy those fun times and so that they can feel safe knowing they are taken care of.

What’s the funniest thing your children have done?

There are so many funny moments with our kids but the one that comes to mind at the moment is the time our three-year-old daughter, Sara, had completely demolished her bedroom, it was a mess! She was standing in the ruins holding her two soft monkey dolls when she looked up at us and quietly said, “The monkeys did it.”

What is your proudest dad moment?

My proudest moment as a parent so far has been when our three kids came up with the idea to put together a care basket for one of the homeless people in Nashville. We watched, with our hearts bursting, as they handed it to them and thought that there is no greater personality trait than that of compassion.

From Pembroke, Ontario, Jason Blaine won CMT’s talent search: Project Discovery in 2002. He released his first hit within the year and has had an impressive 6 albums with numerous singles, videos, awards and nominations. This country music star has a clear handle on parenting and a lovely family as his muse. He also does a lot of giving back, supporting several causes and organizations.

A picnic fit for a queen

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II photo: PolizeiBerlin

While we’re not your typical obsessed Royal watchers, we’ve got to admit that there’s something enchanting about the fairytale family, and we wish Her Majesty a very happy 90th birthday.

Carolyn Robb, was the personal chef to the Royal Family for a decade. She fed Prince Charles and Lady Diana when Harry and William were just little princes that enamoured the world. Robb shared some of the  favourite Royal dishes – and she’s got the inside scoop on the royal faves. So to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, we recommend this picnic of dishes created by Robb. These dishes are perfect for packing up and literally fit for a Queen!

The menu – click on any of the descriptions for the full recipe:

SALAD OF PROSCUITTO-WRAPPED PEACHES WITH FIGS & BUFFALO MOZZARELLA: This is a wonderful way to begin a picnic and the salad can be presented in a salad bowl or in a box for ease of packing and transporting it.

It is best eaten freshly baked, but makes really good toast on day two. If it comes out of the oven just before you go on your picnic you can wrap it in baking parchment and a tea-towel to keep it warm!

Parenting as a team. Who’s side are you on anyway?

Posted on June 2, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Urban Suburban Mommy .

It’s tough at the best of times to parent. It’s even tougher when there’s more than one of you.

Remember before you had kids? You had it all planned out in your head, and you knew exactly what kind of parent you were going to be, and how you were going to do that.

I remember.

photo: Newtown grafitti

photo: Newtown grafitti

And then, there were two. Two of you, and that meant you weren’t alone in your parenting decisions, styles, or ideas. As a parent, you instantly become one half of the team. Difficult for some, especially if you’re a take-charge kind of person, but if you’re going to parent successfully, it has to be done as a partnership.

Like marriage, parenting is teamwork, and like any team, you need to get to know your opponent so they become not only your ally, but your confidant, support system, and partner. It may be difficult to take a step back as commander and settle into the role of member, but remember who you’re doing it for, and the motives behind it. As a parent, your role is to empower, lead by example, and show a united front, so that your kids grow into confident, self-assured team-players themselves. So what’s important here, and how do you do that?

1. You’re a Partnership. Be A Partnership.

Before any partnership can be successful, you have to understand them. Learn about your partner’s parenting styles. Everyone has different ideas and styles, and at the end of the day, each of you will have something constructive, important and valuable to contribute. Make sure that your styles compliment each other. If some don’t, that’s okay, but talk about when a parenting style is ok to institute, and when not. If you’re not sure, discuss it. When it comes to consequencing, (not punishing, there’s ever a lesson in that), ensure you’re both on the same page for that particular incident or issue. Let your partner know how you’ve handled things, what was said, and what, if any, were the consequences. The last thing you want is to confuse your child. There should be no “well Mommy said”, or “Daddy said”… Be consistent. Don’t belittle your kids either, while you’re having your discussion with them. Always be thinking how you can fill their empowerment cups.

2. Create a Plan-Of-Action.

Before any action plan can work, there must be open communication. You’ve got to share the reigns now. That was a hard one for me. Being able to have a conversation about your parenting styles is tantamount. Discuss the 5-W’s of how you’re going to parent; What, Where, When, Why, Who, and How. Don’t forget to tag-team the other person if you’re not able to keep your cool or if things begin to escalate in your little one. You can also disengage, take a few minutes for your own time-out,  regroup, collect your wits, and come back. You’ll get more leverage out of of parenting this way, and you’ll also be teaching your child about emotional control and ownership of one’s emotions.

photo: Prachatai

photo: Prachatai

3. Agree to Disagree.

For some, this means taking that back seat and listening to what your partner has to say. Hear what they have to say, without being reactive. Nothing good ever came from impulse. Be considerate. Listen. Think, Consider. Acknowledge and validate.

You may not think at that moment, their ideas or how-to’s are amenable to you, so take it in, let it brew in your mind so you can respond in calm, and revisit. Let your partner know you respect their ideas, otherwise, you’ve lost even before things have begun. It’s great to be able to have a discussion about certain ideas, because often better ideas come to the surface. And, it’s another great bonding opportunity for you and your partner.

photo: Laurent Bartkowski

photo: Laurent Bartkowski

4. It’s all about the Compromise.

If you’ve agreed to disagree, in fact what you’ve inadvertently but constructively done, is create an open space for further discussion to compromise. Like marriage, it’s not about making concessions, succeeding everything, relenting, or just giving up. It’s about the journey. The compromise. Not only is this another great bonding opportunity for you and your partner, but you can actually work a lot out and learn about each other when you’ve learnt how to compromise, and have had an opportunity to see how it feels to be successful in that.  It’s what I call the “experience of the experience.” If you haven’t felt how good something feels, you won’t necessarily remember it when you need to.

Don’t forget to let all your caregivers know how you parent, so there’s even more consistency for you and your child(ren).
Happy Parenting!

Happy Friday the 13th!

Posted on May 13, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Struggle is Real .

friday the 13

Paraskevidekatriaphobia. Sounds like something my kid coughed up, but it’s actually the technical name for fear of Friday the 13th.

Irrational. Completely.

I know people love their superstitions, but I was born on a Friday the 13th (August, mark it on your calendar, folks) and I’ve grown up knowing the stigma attached to the day – in fact, experiencing it first hand. I’m not even kidding. If I had a dollar for every time someone said “Oh, well that explains a lot” or “Geez, you must be so unlucky” or “Wow, creepy” well, I’d have enough money to buy myself a few nice bottles of birthday champagne every year, anyways!

My mom never failed to tell me that I was born under a lucky star and that Friday the 13th was the luckiest day in the world for her because it was the day she became a mom, and truthfully, it never made me feel bad about myself – but it did totally dumbfound me that people could say things like that to a kid!

Whatever. I love my birthday – ask anyone that knows me. I celebrate it like it’s a national holiday and expect everyone else around me to, too. In fact I celebrate my half birthday in February – take that Paraskevidekatriaphobia-ites!

It’s probably because of my start to life on Friday the 13th that I grew up not having any superstitions. Why should I be afraid of black cats? I don’t walk under ladders because it’s not safe for the person standing on them, but I can spill salt and not throw it everywhere, and there’s no way I’m going to carry around a rabbit’s foot – who thought of that barbaric totem to divine luck. That foot certainly didn’t bring the rabbit who grew it any good ends! Plus, I’ve broken enough mirrors to keep me in bad luck for this life and the next!

The lucky star my mother said I was born under is a nice thought, but my mom always told me to make my own luck. She was one to find a penny and pick it up for all day long she’d have good luck – but she’d also have an extra penny.

Do people teach these superstitions to their kids any more? I keep the penny one going because it always reminds me of my mom, but otherwise? I don’t want my kids growing up with irrational fears, thinking if they cross their fingers they’ll up their chances of making something good happen or having the urge to knock on wood any time they mentions something they want to happen.

It makes me laugh when I see people doing these things out of habbit. Have you ever been speaking with someone when they actually do three knocks on their own head while saying “Knock on wood” for luck, like some oral talisman that will protect them from befalling the wrath of whatever bad may come of daring to speak their hopes and dreams aloud!

While the Friday the 13th stigma will likely stick around – and let’s face it, that namesake slasher flick series didn’t help the cause – embrace the day and make your own luck, it will always be the more successful way to enjoy good things happening to you.

Urban Suburban Daddy’s gifts for new dads

Posted on April 25, 2016 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Mommy Approved, Urban Suburban Daddy .

Lets face it mamas, most of the gifts we get are from other mamas. Those guys don’t seem to go all gaga over baby registries – and even when it’s your hubby’s friend, he expects you to to pick something up for their new arrival.

A close friend just had a baby, and we couldn’t be more excited. Even though I’m dying to get my dose of newborn sweetness, I’m not sure when we’ll go over. We’re just not going to descend on their quiet home with the boys in tow. Sean really wanted to get them something and actually discussed it with me! While mamas are all about the list of necessities and the inside scoop on what the new mama needs, my Urban Suburban Daddy wanted to get something cute, sweet and more personal.

Conventional and useful weren’t as relevant.

So without further ado, here’s Urban Suburban Daddy’s baby gift list:

Ramones onesie

The Ramones Onesie

Pick your favourite band, could be The Ramones, Green Day, The Cure, AC DC – a rockstar onesie is the way to go. Sure it will endure the diaper blowouts and spitups like all the rest, but it still says “Yah, we’re good” like no little pink polka dot number could.

Art Work by Dan Tanenbaum at Art Interiors

Under Construction Series by Dan Tanenbaum at Art Interiors

Baby’s first piece of art – why not? If it’s not to juvenile, it’s something that can grow with them. And if you pick a great budding artist, who knows? It could actually be the present that keeps on giving if the artist’s career takes off!

Darth vader

Darth Vader Stuffie

Admittedly, mine is a Star Wars fan, so “something Star Wars” tops every gift list. Stuffies aren’t presents that mommies give each other, we’re way too practical for that – but kids do love them, and they need a few so that they can get really attached to one and have it to snuggle. Darth Vader fits the bill perfectly.

Van's Checkerboard Slip-ons

Van’s Checkerboard Slip-ons

Of course any self-respecting baby needs a good pair of kicks, and Urban Suburban Daddy was torn between the Van’s and the Jordans. While we know they won’t need them for a long time and will probably outgrow them before they see any milage at all, they’re pretty cute!

Crosley Cruiser Turntable

Crosley Cruiser Turntable

While mama might think of something a little more practical in the way of playing music, this really is a cute little number. They come in some great colours and have a jack for connecting your iPod or phone for audio. It’s perfect for DJ Diaper Pants since we know how much they like to stay up ALLLLLLLLL night!

While none of these will likely ever show up on any baby shower registry, sometimes something fun is just what the new parents need. And that’s okay. We like Urban Suburban Daddy’s take on gifts for the new dad, they give us hope that we haven’t entirely lost our edge!
