Car seats: How safe is safe enough?

Posted on July 25, 2018 by Becky Hunt Posted in Mommy Approved .

Car seats.

Ok, I admit, I have an unfair advantage because I have four kids and a grandkid. I’ve seen them survive falls, fires, bullying, getting lost, getting left behind at the store and all the stuff that kids face.

Of course that doesn’t mean my heart hasn’t leapt more than a few times.

Another confession though is this. It makes me angry how much the world preys on the fear instinct of moms, especially new moms. Don’t we have enough to worry about without having to stress over being a mom who trusts their child to a death-trap car seat?

Here’s a little encouragement.

Car Seats are Safe

All car seats sold legally in the United States (and Canada – and many other countries) are subject to meeting federal safety standards. The standards are updated and tend to get more restrictive over time.
And the standards are effective. The CDC says the number of deaths in children under 12 decreased by 42% between 2002 and 2011.

They also say that 9,000 children died during that period.

But if you dig into accident data (not just the CDC estimate), a couple of things are apparent:
– A large percentage of children who die in accidents weren’t buckled at all – Duh!
– Incorrect installation of car seats is a far bigger risk than inferior car seats

That’s why the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) dedicates their reviews of car seats to “usability” factors. They know that injuries are primarily caused by misuse and installation problems, so equipment that is easier to lock, clip, buckle, connect, carry, etc. is much safer.

Don’t Stress Out

Even the lower-end infant and convertible car seats are safe. They may not be the most comfortable, have the best features, be the easiest to use or fit right in your car – but if you install them correctly and buckle the kids up correctly, they are safe. That being said, there will always be a “safer” product. Not always, but often, the more expensive seats have more safety features.

These include:

– Extra side-impact protection
– 5-point harnesses
– Steel frames
– Anti-rebound bars
– Extra layers of padding
– Different technology for energy absorption
– Easier and more reliable latching, straps and buckles

And the list goes on and on…

Maxi-Cosi just introduced the world to the first car seat with built-in airbags, the AxissFix. And there is also a car seat that is completely inflatable.

Don’t Stress, But Do Do These Things

Stressing is actually unsafe. But while you are busy not stressing there are a few things you should do to keep the kiddos safe.

(Don’t roll your eyes)

– Don’t text when you are driving
– Don’t drink and drive
– Don’t drive recklessly – (do drive “wrecklessly”, get it? I just made that one up)

Seriously, this kind of thing is statistically a much bigger risk than buying the wrong car seat.

So, For Car Seats:

– Do look for easy-to-latch and buckle seats
– Do find a nice travel system that makes it easy to transfer car seats from home to car to stroller
– Do keep your child in a rear-facing seat until they are age two
– Do make sure the kid can breathe in the car seat (careful with thick winter coats, it’s highly advisable to remove outerwear and get the straps snug to your little one’s body)
– Do consider a convertible seat so that you don’t have to buy an infant seat and forward-facing seat separately

Another “do” is to take pictures of messes instead of crying over them. It’s really fun to collect “kid
disaster photos” and share them on Facebook! (Ok so that’s not strictly a car seat tip, but sometimes memorable messes happen in car seats too.) If I had actually caught every episode on camera I would seriously be the most famous social media mom of all time.

Other Fancy Car Seat Things

I went to the JPMA show and talked to the Baby Trend people. They have this new
technology they call Connected Gear. The cool thing about it is that it has a sensor in the belt harness that can sense whether your baby is buckled into the seat.

So it can signal your phone if you’ve left the kid in the car. It detects when you’ve walked far enough
away from the car (with your phone) and lets you know if the kid is still in there.

This feature can also be used for a secondary party like a care giver. Your phone can be notified if the care giver makes the same mistake.

It can also tell if the harness isn’t tight enough. If you are interested, search for the Secure Snap Fit Infant Car Seat.

Another interesting car seat development is the Doona Infant Car Seat/ Stroller that basically is a stroller and car seat all in one piece of gear. The wheels and handle fold up into the car seat.

With new developments in safety, technology and style, car seats are getting better and safer all the time. Keeping up with all of the info is a whole other story. But getting one with government approval, not expired and never in an accident is important. It will be the best car seat that works for your baby and your budget  and will keep your child safe and secure.

Blessed mother of two boys and two girls, changing diapers and homeschooling for 20 years and counting. I love to research (I’m a CPA). And I really love to help other moms make wise and thoughtful decisions for their families.

Going-back-to-school-shopping

Posted on August 21, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

I’m not ready to start thinking about back-to-school yet.

My kids don’t have to start class until September 5th, and I always think of Labour Day as the official end of summer fun – even though I haven’t had a summer school break myself in over 20 years.

(Holy moly, did I just say it’s been over 20 years since I finished school!?!?!?)

But we’re moving, and since the boys are going into Grades 2 and 4, it’s the perfect time for me to say “Hey, they need a dedicated space for school work now.” I’ve been shopping for pieces to create the perfect study niche in each of their rooms, and I though I’d share.

I love what I’m seeing, and I think they will too. With a laptop for each kid, this *may* (or not) keep them organized, give them a place to do some work and store library books so we don’t have to do the crazy wild goose hunt every other Monday when their library books are due!

I’d also like to add that I’m focussing on back-to-school supplies that give back. I’ve discovered the ME to WE program (and that makes me resent thinking about ‘back-to-school’ a whole lot less).

“Every ME to WE product makes a positive impact in a developing community. With the Track Your Impact promise, you are able to see where and how your purchase makes a difference! Your kids start the school year with cool supplies and accessories that give school supplies to children in developing communities.”

Back to school – the nanny can help!

Posted on August 18, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

Some of us stay at home with our kids. Some of us choose daycare. But for those of us mamas that choose to employ a nanny, it’s a special dynamic.

The nanny isn’t a friend, the nanny is there because it’s a paid job.

The nanny isn’t family, but many times the nanny is much like family.

We trust the nanny alone with our kids.

The nanny does so much more than just monitoring the little charges while parents are out of the house. The nanny is kind, caring, and will often develop a bond with the children – and the parents too – which goes far beyond the employee/employer relationship.

The Windy City Nanny, Florence Ann Romano of Nanny Magic and author of Nanny and Me, is a seasoned pro. She was, after all, a nanny for the Kardashians among other. Florence offers these 5 tips for having the nanny help with getting the kids ready for going back to school.

Skill Sets

Prepare the kids for whatever skill sets they will be required to abide by in school. For example, if potty training is a skill children are required to have before entering the classroom, this is a great place for a nanny to be involved in the preparation.

Healthy eating

Nannies can assist children in getting children’s nutrition on track, which will ultimately help their attention and energy levels in school.

Picking out outfits

Kids love to be involved in back to school shopping! With the parents consent, nannies can plan a fun day with the kids for back to school shopping and school supplies. This gives them a chance to individualize their look, and also find control in a situation that can be a sometimes challenge or anxiety-inducing transition.

Homework preparation

The nanny can help prepare children for the upcoming curriculum in the classroom by developing fun, interactive games that will start stimulating their minds.

Last hoorah!

Have a final, summer day with the kids – pool, ice cream, playground, zoo – all things they will soon miss, but can enjoy one last time before the school year begins. Make it exciting and special. Also use the opportunity to get the kids pumped up for the memories to follow in the coming year.

Florene Romano PhotoThe Windy City Nanny, Florence Ann Romano of Nanny Magic and author of Nanny and Me, is a dedicated philanthropist and former nanny who has always had a special place in her heart for children. Romano worked for over 15 years as a nanny, beginning as a ‘Mommy’s helper’ at the age of 11. She shares her experiences in Nanny and Me (Mascot Books, May 2015), her beautifully illustrated debut book for children making the transition from being cared for solely by their parents to having a nanny in their home.

Viamede, cottage country’s answer to cottaging for parents that need a break

Posted on July 10, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Bon Voyage, Mommy Approved .

City kid caught his first frog

When I was a kid I desperately wanted to go cottaging. My friends all had cottages. They were in mountains, on lakes, they were “somewhere up north” – which seemed magical and inviting and exclusive. Campers, RVs, tents, trailers, bunkies, chalets, farms – give me any of those and I’d have been a happy girl.

Arriving at Viamede

But my mom wasn’t into it. Not at all. She’s always say:

“So you want to take a vacation where I have NONE of my modern appliances, where I have to cook and clean and look after you while you run from the house to the beach and back, covering the place with dirt for a week. Tell me, how is this a ‘vacation’ for ME?”

I get her point now.

Hiking

She referred to the Holiday Inn in Grand Island, New York, as her cottage. It had a pool, room service, house-keeping and plenty for us to do with – and without – my parents. I now know what the “without” was… but the fact is, we did have a lot of fun there.

However, as an adult, I now see the beauty and benefits of getting out of the city and into cottage country for some downtime. I completely side with my mom that it’s no vacation if I have to be on call for the needs of my family without the benefits of modern appliances, but I think I’ve found my happy place.

Viamede.

It’s a brilliant concept, and for Southern Ontarians, if you’re close to the Kawarthas, go! If there’s not a resort like this near you, it may just be your next big business idea!

Magic hour

The Kawarthas is cottaging country within 200 kilometres of Toronto. Set around Stoney Lake, the area is breath-taking. Viamede is a cross between a cottage and a resort. They’ve got it all, and they’ve got the perfect mix for the city slicker that needs a slice of country now and again.

Let’s start with the cooking – they’ve got the answer for that. Restaurants onsite take care of all your needs. Farm-to-table, food is local and fresh – and phenomenal. There are a couple of choices for dining – including a fine dining spot, Mount Julien, with an exceptional tasting menu. Ditch the kids and dine!

Decadent dessert

Or get a barbecue basket and relax on your cottage deck while you or the hubs fires up the grill. There is also a full kitchenette in the cottages so you can put provisions in the fridge and fix up a quick, no fuss snack. We brought frozen pizzas and lots of fruit and ready-to-eat snacks and drinks, even made Jiffy Pop. When was the last time you made popcorn on the stove?

Midnight snacks? An evening tea? Slip up to the main house and grab what you need. Treats? No problem. My jaw dropped when I mentioned I wanted to make a fire – cottages have wood burning fireplaces – and they handed my son a s’mores kit: A basket with chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallows and pokers to toast them on. (I’m a s’mores aficionado, for my best recipes look here).

They were delish. The main house also has board games and lots of VHS movies, we kicked it old school with the kids with a board game night and a movie night in our cottage.

My mom didn’t want to be chasing us, cleaning up after us, creating activities for us. Viamede also had the answers. Get cleaning service and leave the work to their capable pros. Activities a-plenty, we stayed beside the playground and the kids could wander over while we didn’t! There is an outdoor pool, a lake and an indoor pool with a swim-out to outside. Loved the bubble volcano in the indoor pool – but the best part is the sunsets. From any vantage point the sunsets are a spectacle. Magic hour is truly… magic!

The pool

But with other choices, from a gym to a relaxation centre to hiking trails, a farm and the dog – yes a cottage dog, my kids enjoyed borrowing her for an evening – the kids are entertained without TV. It’s cottaging without the effort, and more.

Sunning himself while getting ready to go paddling

Resort cottages have been around for a long time, and they’re a great way for people like my mom to get the cottage experience without having to bear the brunt of the work, it was actually just as relaxing for me as it was for the rest of the family.

(Well, a little bit stressful when my son decided to call 911 from the phone booth. Leave it to a 6 year old city kid to be a bit bewildered by an actual phone booth. I don’t know if he’s ever really experienced one, but I can tell you that the emergency response time was impressively fast!)

That view

The other nice thing about making memories at a resort cottage is that  you can do it in groups. Another couple, your whole family, extended family, organized trips – you have room to do it all, without having to host! My husband’s family used to rent a resort cottage for Thanksgiving and 50+ family members would gather for the holiday as the leaves changed colour and the resort would do turkey dinner for this little army – Canadian Thanksgiving is early October, it  works at a resort cottage quite nicely.

I’d always wanted a cottage – until now. I think I’ve found the place where our family can make memories. Hopefully not all of them will involve first responders, though now that I think about it, we did have the fire department crash our wedding as my husband and I exchanged vows. (We have the best wedding pictures), so I’m starting to see a theme. As far as cottage resorts go, Viamede stole my heart. There is so much to do and I think the kids will enjoy each return trip as we get to know Stoney Lake and The Kawarthas better – and don’t have to do any work or upkeep to our summer getaway spot, least of all, clean the pool, fix a roof or have someone pump the septic.

My mom would approve.

Family fun

Father’s Day – stop with the ties already.

Posted on June 16, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

Okay mamas, here’s the deal. If you’re like me, it’s less than 72 hours until Father’s Day and you just realized it, because the kids brought home half-dried macaroni art spray-painted gold and some clay handprint with a sweet inscription about “Your hand in mine, Daddy” from school today, and it’s dawned on you that something’s a brewing that you’ve forgotten!

Okay, to be fair, I am usually on top of everything, everyone, every present and every holiday – but this past week alone I’ve drowned my iPhone, lost my car in the underground parking at the mall and sent my kid to school without lunch.

It’s a slow week and yet I can barely keep up, so when the tell-tale hand-crafted gifts made their ways into my kids’ closets this afternoon, the reality of what this weekend would hold came crashing down like a tower of Legos.

But I’m nothing if not resilient, so with replacement iPhone in hand, I pulled it together. I brainstormed. I called in favours. I sourced and I located.

Father’s Day is saved. The reservations at his favourite restaurant have been made, the Star Wars present has been purchased and the card will be picked up tomorrow.

Or Saturday. Definitely by Sunday.

I’m not one of those cynics who hates Father’s Day for its commercialism – I only feel that way about Valentine’s Day. No, I blanked this year, but generally I embrace Father’s Day. My husband just happens to be the cream of the crop when it comes to best dads, so I like to make a fuss.

(Plus he knows to make a fuss for Mother’s Day. We have an understanding.)

If you’ve got a bad case of the last-minute-panics, here are the other suggestions I came up with while brainstorming. I bet the Dad (or dad-like role model) in your life would approve, and these are easy to get presents that he’ll actually enjoy.

Cool Dad

Super-trending, these babies are cool. They never go out of style. They come in some great colours and different lenses so you can get him something to up his cool factor, as if he weren’t cool enough already.

The Original Wayfarer Classic

(Pick yourself a pair up too.)

High Flying Dad

The mantra these days “collect experiences, not things” really resonates. For the Dad whose got his feet firmly planted on the ground, why not send him into the sky on a helicopter ride over the city? Other cool options include: Hot air balloon rides, charter planes and – for the uber-adventurous, a sky dive or squirrel suit experience!

Helicopter ride

(Plus, this one you can order online and present a print-out if you can’t get to the mall. Groupon may even have a deal!)

Date with Dad

Dad loves spending time with the kids, so why not create a special event: Tickets to his favourite sporting event! Or if Dad’s not the sporty kind, it could also be tickets to a concert, a stand-up comedy show or play, depending on Dad’s interests.

New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays

(Bonus tip: Get tickets for him and the kid(s) to go on a date and enjoy some free time to yourself! Is that wrong?)

Dressing Dad

It’s totally no bueno when you and your better half go out in matchy matchy outfits, but it’s super-cute when Dad and his little muppet do it. One year I made my Star Wars geek hubby a “Trust me, I’m a Jedi” t-shirt and made both boys t-shirts that said Padawan to go with it. There are tons of cute theme Dad-n-Kid shirts out there. Go to the local t-shirt printing guy with your best ideas.

Dad-n-Kid matching shirts

(Padawan is a child training to be a Jedi, in case you didn’t know. Now you know.)

Dad with a Fun Streak

Sure he may wear a suit to work, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a bit of party on the inside. Set Dad up on the Sock-Of-The-Month-Club. Seriously, check the ankles of any well-dressed man and you’ll see their fun streak peeping out between crisp hem and well-polished brogue. Men and their socks. It’s a thing. From orange argyles to corn cob patterns, this is the gift that keeps on giving – every month until next Father’s Day!

Sock-of-the-Month Club

(And it’s always in his size!)

Backyard Warrior Dad

Okay, I may or may not want this for selfish reasons, but I know Dad will think this is the coolest. If you love your Roomba, just imagine how much Dad is going to love his AutoMower!!!! Seriously. The thing quietly and effortlessly roams around the yard, trimming, snipping and clipping to perfection, without any assistance – from Dad or otherwise.

Husqvarna Automower 450X

(The price tag may be a little steep, but the years of no asking, begging, nagging and yelling about the lawn will be more than worth it.)

Happy Father’s Day!

Find out why Tencel is seriously trending!

Posted on May 5, 2017 by Sara Duck Posted in Mommy Approved .

This week, Sara Duck, The Modern Curator, has some great insight about Tencel. This fabric is trending and a few pieces will probably make their way into your wardrobe shortly – if they haven’t already.
G5371_RD5810_m

Scalloped Romper in Tencel Linen from J.Crew

I’ve noticed a pattern lately with my shopping habits. Every time I find something that catches my fancy and I check the label to see the material it’s made from, the same word keeps popping up, Tencel.

It’s no coincidence either.

From a denim culotte jumpsuit at Gap and a khaki green drapey coat at H&M to a minimalist striped duvet set from the new Toronto-based e-commerce site Merchant Sons, they all have one thing in common, they use Tencel in the material makeup.

Why is Tencel trending? I had to investigate.

Tencel (official brand name) or lyocell (generic name) is a sustainable fibre made from cellulose found in wood pulp that is turned into one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics around. The biodegradable fibre is produced with minimal impact on the environment, including an economical use of energy and water and lower emissions into the air.

“Tencel provides an unparalleled combination of durability and breathability, and with the warmer weather approaching, it’s no surprise that Canadian home decor retailers are catching on to the trend following its popularity in Europe. It’s also an eco-friendly option, which appeals to today’s conscience consumer,” says Cathy Ly, co-founder of Merchant Sons. Did I mention the price point for Tencel products is incredibly reasonable? Are you running to the shops yet?

Here are my top picks on the market right now!

Unpacking unboxing: A YouTube phenomenon

Posted on April 6, 2017 by Alexis Nicols Posted in Mommy Approved .

My kids are obsessed with YouTube Kids. That’s nothing new. Personally, I’m happy to buy a few extra minutes to eat food while it’s hot, do some laundry or answer a quick email. I’m vigilant about what they watch, and often watch videos with them (just because the app has “Kids” after it doesn’t mean it’s entirely kid-friendly, especially when your boys are collectively younger than a grade-schooler.)

Their latest obsession isn’t episodes of Paw Patrol or mini movies featuring the Minions. It’s videos of adults unpacking toys and playing with them. After conducting some research, I discovered that this phenomenon – referred to as “unboxing” – isn’t new. And if my kids are totally into it, then chances are yours are too.

https://youtu.be/Nflx3iRifEE

Borrowed from the adult version of unpacking new tech items such as iPhones or computers, “unboxing” videos feature adult voices, usually female and unnaturally enthusiastic, guiding viewers through components of unpackaged toys. Sometimes there’s just music, but my kids favour a fully guided tour. Often, the toys are arranged with time-lapse (stop motion) into a fully developed, if poorly scripted, plotline.

Theories abound as to why unboxing has become so wildly popular (The Google search term “unboxing” has increased 871% since 2010*) I’m not a psychologist and won’t overwhelm you with theories of the mind philosophy or cognitive development. I’m here to tell you that unboxing is weird, but it won’t mess up your kid.

It will all be ok, even if you don’t see any obvious value in it.

There’s a pejorative view of technology and its impact on childhood development, but I’m betting it doesn’t come from the 80% of parents who give their device to their children between the ages of 0-2**. The scape and scope of play is changing, but that doesn’t mean it’s all passive entertainment turning tiny, developing minds into mush. For me, there’s little difference between watching these videos with my kids (while they interpret and explain what’s happening) and reading them their favourite book 500 times.

Unboxing is exploratory and feeds into their innate desire to know what stuff is, how it works and what’s hidden inside. They’re no less inclined to explore their world just because there’s someone on YouTube doing it for them. For proof I offer my son Nate who, just yesterday, was very busy using my sunglasses to crack open a walnut to see what was inside.

At the end of the day, is there really any difference between watching a video of someone creating a play-based narrative and watching commercials specifically inserted between Saturday morning cartoons to hawk directed play? When I was a kid, we had Strawberry Shortcake, Barbie, Care Bears, and a whole host of other playtime friends. The implicit promise was the more characters and/or accessories you purchased, the more vivid your playtime experience would be.

My kids know the difference between “playing” and “watching”, and there’s no indication from either of them they’re going to give up playing with their own toys any time soon. Watching a video of a woman playing with a Peppa Pig “Mashem” isn’t going to hinder their ability to learn, create and play.

Start writing out those Valentine’s Day cards!

Posted on February 8, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

I’m feeling really proud of myself, I have realized before the stores are all sold out that my children will be participating in Valentine’s Day next week. On the 14th. As happens every year.

Now to get them to the store to pick out a few packs before they’re sold out.

I loved this class activity when I was a kid and I like to indulge my boys now that it’s their turn. In years past we’ve done all hand-made cards, we’ve done crafts, one year I even tried to get all Pinteresty with the dough that hardens into a flower ornament that we bedazzled. 60 of them. It was insane, and days of work!

This year I. Just. Can’t. Sometimes a mama has too much on the go, and it’s okay to let go of something. This year it’s the craftastic exertion of energy on Valentine’s Day handouts.

And that’s okay. I’m fine with it and my sons are fine with it, but it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun picking out some great class Valentine’s cards.

The DIY made easy

This kit from Target still offers a bit of handmade craftiness that the kids can do with little help. Though realistically, mine will lose interest after about 5 cards and I’ll do the rest. Unless I bribe them with TV time while they weave those strings!

Say it with a smiley face

Why say it with words when this Hallmark Valentine’s Day card pack will say it in emojis for you? After all, isn’t this just prepping our young minds for the inane emoji text convos they’re bound to have in a few short years? You’re practically doing them a favour.

The download

Run out of time? Stores all empty? Don’t worry, it’s the 21st century and AvHE design’s Etsy store has you covered with some super duper cute print-your-own. Yes, isn’t this genius? Get yourself some paper and hit print. Print up as many of this cute card as you want, and you can even insert your kid’s name, so you, my friend, are done like a pro!

Nostalgia

Your know your little ones are too young for nostalgia, but these vintage valentines from Indigo sure do take you back. And you know they’ll be a hit with other parents as their littles share what your little handed out!

Taste of the Force

What do they say? All’s fair in love and Star Wars. The Star Wars franchise is just huge, and your little one will be getting plenty of Darth Vader, Storm Trouper, Luke and Leia messages from their little padawan friends, but your kid will stand out with these Star Wars cards from Amazon – complete with the lollipops!

The only other advice I have is, don’t get the overly lovey dovey cards for the kids. I’ve seen some pretty inappropriate cards for kids. I don’t expect any 8 year old to love another and B2gether 4ever or be my first kiss. Let’s keep it rated G and all in fun. And if anyone wants to get extra Pinteresty this year, please share, I’d love to see your inspiration – for next year!!

Why Choose Live Clean?

Every day more of us are concerned about what we’re applying to our skin – and our children’s! – and what the products we use are doing to the environment. At Live Clean we strive to have as little environmental impact as we possibly can.  We use only plant and natural sourced or non-petrolatum ingredients that are renewable and sustainable. We don’t use anything that will deplete our natural resources.  We’ve formulated all our beauty and personal care products without the still commonly used chemical ingredients – like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Diethanolamine (DEA) and silicones. And our products are free of parabens and other harsh preservatives.

That’s not all: Live Clean is completely vegan/vegetarian, plant and natural based, with no animal products or animal by-products used in the formulations.  Live Clean is also cruelty-free; none of the products or their ingredients have been tested on animals. In its sensitivity to the environment, Live Clean is also free of phosphates, known contributors to water pollution.  And our packaging, of course, is eco-friendly.

Just as important to you, we know, our products have to work! Our eco-friendly formulations haven’t sacrificed product efficacy and pleasure of use.  We believe every Live Clean product is exceptional in every way.
