Three ways to style a vintage jacket

Posted on January 4, 2017 by Sara Duck Posted in The Best You .

This week from The Modern Curator: Vintage jacket – three ways

Sara Duck in Vintage Jacket

I picked up this vintage fur jacket from my favourite consignment store Designer Exchange, in Toronto. It was love at first sight (and touch!) and the price matched my modest budget, which was an even bigger bonus. Though fur and faux fur jackets are generally associated with a glam look, I wanted to show you that this type of jacket can actually be very versatile… not to mention warm for the cooler months! If you’re on the hunt for a similar type of jacket, scour vintage, consignment and charity shops where you can pick one up for steal. And, don’t forget to check grandma’s closet for any hidden gems, all it takes is some minor alterations to create a modern look with a cool vintage flair.

I’ve created three different looks below, what’s your favourite?

Look #1: Cool and CasualCool and Casual look for vintage jacket

Super Skinny Low Jeans from H&M/ Vintage Fur Jacket from Designer Exchange / Tippi Sweater in Ivory from J.Crew/ Cross Body Bag with Scarf Detail from Zara/ Classy St Mawes Silvertone Watch by Daniel Wellington from Hudson’s Bay/ Betty Sunglasses from J.Crew/ Chuck Taylor Hi Black Sneakers by Converse from SoftMoc

Look #2: French Femme French Femme look for vintage jacket

Fit and Flare Striped Dress from Banana Republic/ Vintage Fur Jacket from Designer Exchange/ Soft Wool Felted Beret by Parkhurst from Hudson’s Bay/ Small Love Heart Chain Bag by Saint Laurent from Farfetch/ Le Vernis Nail Colour in Rouge Puissant by Chanel/ Pattern Neck Tie Scarf from Urban Outfitters/ Put-Together Appeal Flat from Mod Cloth

Look#3: Working Girl

Blitzing the day away blissed me out

Posted on January 3, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

Michelle and I have been talking about 30 days of wellness for some time now. It was all I could do to get through December – early deadlines, family gatherings, holiday parties, children’s winter concerts (three of them!) Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s celebrations – the month flew by before I knew it.

Then January started off with an air of calm, and I knew I’d be able to embrace 30 days of wellness.

Get yourself to the spa!

I mean it. It seems overindulgent, doesn’t it? Carving out many hours without the kids, without the responsibility, without technology. But why not? Why can’t mama be allowed to shut off completely and be indulged for 3 or 4 hours without interruption or distraction?

My bestie and I usually have kids in tow and can’t focus on a conversation for three consecutive minutes, so the spa was the perfect place to hang.

I love this place for the water therapies – Body Blitz Spa

I know it’s a luxury to be able to leave the kids and go – whether you’re a SAHM, a working mom, a single mom or a busy type A multitasking machine, but you NEED to make time for yourself, and the spa really is one of my favourite ways to recharge. It’s the quiet. It’s the insulation from the outside world. It’s the fact that they’ll actually kick you out if they see you with technology that keeps me in check.

The Water Therapies

We hit up Body Blitz Spa in Toronto. I love this place – it’s a peaceful retreat with a circuit of plunge pools, soaking tubs and saunas. Sometimes I commit to the cycle, sometimes I just chill out in whichever space I feel. You can add a massage, a facial, a scrub or other body treatment if you want, but the water therapies are just so soothing I’ve never really thought additional relaxation was needed.

It’s SO relaxing – just what January’s wellness calls for after the feverish pace of December.

Blitzing the day away blissed me out.

Of course, if you can’t make time for an actual spa outing, give yourself an evening of spa indulgence just the same. A hot bath, epsom salts, essential oils, a facial pack, a good body scrub, some flowers, some delicious detoxifying juices and teas and you’ve got yourself a set-up for soothing and relaxation! The important thing is – no kids, no electronics, no distractions.

30 days of wellness starts now – give back!

Posted on January 1, 2017 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

So Elisa and I have decided that we at Urban Suburban Mommy are going to embark on 30 days of wellness starting this January. Well we are now January 1 and there are no excuses – it’s time to start today.  What does wellness mean – well so many things.  Not only doesn’t it mean eating right, exercising, taking care of yourself, being the best you but it also means contributing to the wellness of others.

I am so inspired today.  My neighbor and dear friend Ana messaged me this morning and asked me where she could donate her hair.

Yes she cut 11 inches from her hair and is ready to donate it to a charity that creates wigs for children who suffer from cancer. As you may or may not know, cancer is a cause dear to my heart.

I am totally blown away by this act of kindness.  And Ana looks fabulous! I am empowered to also do something (and hopefully several things) great this year in terms of giving back.

Charity is so important and it definitely is integral to not only one’s mental well-being but it also helps others.  In this case, a child battling cancer will feel good because they look good.  I love this!

We will be launching an exciting project soon and a portion of a our proceeds will go to charity.  What will you do to contribute to the wellness of others?

If you are interested in donating your hair just like Ana, please get in touch with some of these great organizations.

Canadian Cancer Society

Angel Hair for Kids

Brain Tumour Foundation (lots of great links here)

Locks of Love

Thank you and happy 2017.  It’s going to be a great one. xo

Please add to the comments if there is a specific topic you would like us to cover pertaining to wellness. 🙂

Set intentions and do something different this New Years

Posted on December 28, 2016 by venicealissia Posted in The Best You .

In the past I’ve never really felt the need or desire to set intentions for the upcoming year. Of course I’d do the usual run of the mill wishes to keep a healthy physical workout regime, be the best version of myself that I could be etc. But I never really dug that deep into my souls to set the intentions that could really make a difference in all aspects of my life. This year is different. I feel like there is almost an urgency to set the PERFECT intentions that will set me on the right foot, path that could potentially alter my life forever.

I am a single mom with two boys.  I have a partner with whom I share wonderful adventures with that holds a special place in my heart.  My life is filled with excitement, adventures, struggles, peace and happiness. It’s not perfect but it’s my life and I strive for happiness, passion, compassion and the most unique life for my boys.

As the new year rapidly approaches I find myself reflecting on my past, happy moments, sad moments my failures and accomplishments. Life is not suppose to be linear – there are twists and turns, bumps and hiccups.

All of which I try to embrace and seek peace and acceptance on the path that I had taken and now look to the future and the path in which I wish to forge.

This New Year’s Eve I wanted to experience something different than the usual over priced prix fixe NYE menu in an oversized venue that lacked intimacy.

I’ve decided to trade in my sequinned black dress and 6 inch heels for hiking boots and Patagonia gear:)

Of course in true Alissia style we’re still going to maintain a feminine and sensual touch to the look. I may be wearing fleece and gortex on the outside but my undergarments will still have a festive and cheeky flair.

As for NYE activity ideas – here are a few that will unlock the adventure enthusiast in you, your partner and the rest of the family:

  1. Acro yoga and rock climbing retreat in Joshua Tree.
  2. Surf trip with a few friends and family and head down south to Ensenada.
  3. Skiing/snowboarding at Blue Mountain, Whistler/Blackcomb, or Mammoth Mountain to name a few with the family then head in and sit by the fire as you prepare cheese fondue for your NYE’s feast!\

Alissia Marciano is a fellow mom and Urban Suburban Mommy’s fashion stylist and lifestyle expert, as well as, an on-air celebrity fashion host. Currently based in Los Angeles, she has worked and forged her talent around the world in such cities as Paris, New York, Vancouver, and Toronto. From guest appearances on Rachael Ray, to the countdown to the Oscars on the red carpet with E!, and co-hosting Look A Like and Sexy Girl,  Alissia is a prominent figure in the fashion industry and her success has earned her the reputation of a highly sought after international fashion and celebrity stylist. Beyond fashion and music, Alissia’s portfolio includes an extensive list of advertising clients including Diesel, ESPN, Nike, Acura, Orbit, and CAT. Her eclectic mix of femininity and rock n’ roll has graced the pages of such publications as L’Uomo Vogue, Neo 2 (Spain), Entertainment Weekly, New York Moves, Wonderland (Japan), The National (UAE) and Filler to name a few. In addition to her work in the industry, Alissia has two beautiful boys with whom she shares many wonderful adventures and creates lasting memories with, surfing and skateboarding being two of their favorite activities.

Create a cozy bedroom

This week from The Modern Curator: Creating a cozy bedroom

Photographs courtesy of HomeSense. Velvet Drapes/ Chest of Drawers/ Tufted King Sized Headboard/ Velvet Club Chair/ Tufted Bench from HomeSense.

Let’s face it, come winter, we spend a lot more time inside and in our bedrooms!

Hibernation mode, right?

Our bedrooms become much more than a place to catch Z’s. The bedroom becomes a place to binge watch Netflix, cry over a good book, indulge in bed-nics (picnics in bed!) and a quiet sanctuary to recover from party season.

Follow these tips to make your bedroom a cozy and inviting space that will quickly become the favourite room in your house.

Bedding Look for bedding that is soft (no scratchy materials please!) and durable, such as 100 percent Egyptian or Pima cotton. “Each bedroom should have a premium down comforter. Investing in quality bedding basics is key to comfort,” says Tamara Robbins Griffith, HomeSense Design Expert. “From there, you can be flexible and have fun with your top of bed fashion by swapping in and out new patterned sheet sets and duvet covers.”

Pillows Besides your mattress and bedding, Tamara points out that good pillows are the key to sleeping well and achieving a comfortable bedroom space. Once you have your sleeping pillows chosen, add accent pillows in varying sizes, colours and textures that will flow with your space and add extra snugness.

Luxurious Throw Tamara suggests introducing layers of bedding to add warmth and texture to your bed. Think faux-fur or thick cable knit to give you a luxe, cozy feel.

Create Vignettes Use your bedroom to surround yourself with items you love such as an art piece, vintage mirror, favourite book and bouquet of flowers. All these special items help to achieve a calming and personalized space.

Lighting  When it comes to achieving a relaxing atmosphere, choose side lamps for your bedside tables with soft lighting (low-watt bulbs). Or, create low lighting by putting your main light on a dimmer switch.

Statement earrings – the showstoppers!

Posted on December 21, 2016 by Sara Duck Posted in The Best You .

This week from The Modern Curator: Statement earrings – just in time for party season!

dessert and statement earrings

Earrings my own all by J.Crew/ Champagne Flavoured Macarons, Individual Marie Antoinette Tart, Handmade Marshmallows and Pistachio Profiterole from Nadège/ Pistachio Eclair and Mint Candy from Nugateau

On most days my ear gear is simple and classic. Think diamond or gold ball studs or pearl earrings. However, when I have somewhere special to go, I love to wear a dash of flash on my earlobes and I’m not afraid to go big!

Back in the ’80s when statement earrings were all the rage, they also weighed the same as a baby elephant, causing damage to the earlobes… we won’t get into details but let’s just say I know many women who can only wear clip-ons now!

Fortunately, today’s statement earrings are light as a feather, so you can wear them while keeping your lobes intact. The beauty of the statement earring is that you can keep your outfit simple (hello, LBD!) and let your bling shine. Here are my top 8 show-stopping looks.

Green envy

Posted on November 23, 2016 by Sara Duck Posted in The Best You .

We’re thrilled to introduce our newest contributor, Sara Duck. Each week this spectacular style maven brings us some inspiration. She’s got the eye for a great piece, the ability to pull together the perfect look – and it’s not limited to one area – so savour these ideas and add a bit of fun and flair to your world, whether it’s to your wardrobe, your work desk, a hostess gift, your child’s room – or really any room in your home! And to enjoy more of Sara’s style, visit TheModernCurator.ca

The colour green conjures up many memories for me. I can remember, endless summers trying to perfect cartwheels on freshly mowed green grass, at my family home. I think about the lush, vibrant, green palm trees lining the beach in Playa Rincón in the Dominican Republic. And, I also try to erase the memories of my mother trying to force me to eat (every child’s favourite vegetable), Brussel sprouts (gah!).

Do you have a favourite memory connected to the colour green? I’d love to hear about it! Green is definitely trending at the moment, especially the olive-green tone, it’s everywhere! And, I predict it to be Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017.

PMS diet: The 8 dos & don’ts

Posted on November 18, 2016 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in The Best You .

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is such a regular occurrence for so many of us – it’s a normal part of getting our period. The Mayo Clinic estimates about 75 percent of women get at least some form of PMS. Although the causes of PMS aren’t well understood, “fluctuating levels of hormones and brain chemicals are thought to play a role. What a woman eats and drinks can also have an effect“ says  Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O.  a Manhattan Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. He shares with us 10 do’s and don’ts for getting through PMS as pain free as possible.

pms

1) Do get more calcium

Some studies have shown that calcium levels are lower in women with PMS, and that those with the highest intake of calcium reported the mildest PMS symptoms. Dr. Calapai suggests sourcing your calcium from foods such as low-fat milk and dairy, calcium-fortified breakfast cereals and orange juice, and leafy greens.

2) Don’t consume excessive salt

Salt increases water retention, so if you suffer from premenstrual bloating, do limit the amount of sodium you consume in the run up to your period. Eliminate the salt shaker, and cut back on the canned foods, processed foods and condiments, all of which are overflowing with sodium.

3) Do drink more water

“Although this sounds counter-intuitive,” says Dr. Calapai,  “Water can actually alleviate PMS-related fluid retention. Drink plenty of H2O – aim for 8 to 10 glasses a day; more when you exercise – to flush toxins out of your system and reduce premenstrual bloating.”

4) Do Eat Dark Chocolate

Craving the sugary confections like chocolate and cupcakes is totally normal. Try and reach for dark chocolate when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.  A bonus is, it will boost your mood.

5) Don’t Consume Coffee

While you may need that daily cup   (or two) to be functional, studies show that caffeine increases levels of anxiety. Dr. Calapai explains that, “Your blood vessels contract when caffeine is present in your body, which worsens menstrual cramps. Also, for those with loose stool while on their periods, adding caffeine to your diet will make it difficult for your body to retain water and worsen diarrhea.”

6) Do Eat Greens

Losing a lot of blood can cause iron deficiency, which can cause lightheadedness or nausea. To counteract this problem, Dr. Calapai recommends stocking up on darker greens, like spinach, kale and broccoli to get your iron levels back up, but avoid eating them raw. For spinach, sautée with minced garlic and olive oil for a warm, flavorful bundle of nutrients!

7) Don’t Drink Alcohol

It will only worsen feelings of depression and moodiness. One study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology also found that regular alcohol consumption increased length of and severity of cramps in women who experience cramps during PMS.

8) Do Eat Bananas

Sleep disturbances right before your period are the norm for many women. Plus, experts at John Hopkins University in Baltimore found that too little sleep made women more susceptible to pain (meaning those cramps will feel even worse). So make sure to get your z’s by eating bananas, which contain melatonin—a sleep-aid hormone that’s secreted at night and helps regulate our body’s natural rhythms.

Tech tips to help you manage your household

Posted on November 16, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You .

Being a working mom is probably one of the toughest things to figure out. Time management and organization are pretty hard to master.  I want to share some of my tech tips and secrets to help you manage your household

1. Take a zen moment before you start your day.  Before you can get your household in check, you must commit to some calm and some ‘ME time.’ Every morning I use an amazing yoga meditation APP called Headspace.  It keeps me grounded as I start the craziness of my working day; leading a double life as a wife and mom to three growing boys.  All you need is 10 minutes.

mom_meditating_h

2. Meal Planning saves time, sanity and money. I basically decide on my meals and at the same time order my groceries online. But I take meal planning one step further in order to stay organized and maximize my time. Once I have decided that, let’s say, I will be making a lasagna on Monday, beef stew on Tuesday and chicken curry on Wednesday (etc.), I insert the meal plan of the day with corresponding recipe into my calendar.  I send it to my husband as well. On days where I am working late, my hubby is able to stay organized and save time by looking at the meal plan and ingredients list so that he can get dinner cooked quickly for our 3 hungry boys. There is no guess work on what to make. We are all planned out for the week.

3. Ordering groceries online is a huge time saver.  And time is well – money.  I will either use Loblaws or Grocery Gateway depending on which grocer has the better deals that week. Every Sunday morning before my kids wake up, I plant myself at the kitchen table armed with my cookbooks and a huge mug of coffee. I decide on which meals I will prepare for the week and order accordingly. Ordering groceries online also goes hand and hand with meal planning.

4. Manage your budget online. I just recently started using MySpend by TD Bank. It is this awesome APP that I highly recommend. After you input all of your budget information, the APP will send you immediate alerts about spending habits. For example, you will receive a text message if you have spent more than your allotted grocery budget.  It keeps spending in check.  Budgets and expenses are key to managing any household.

5.  Stay connected to your kids’ teachers with Facebook. If your kids’ teachers will allow it, a great way to communicate is through Facebook. It is so much easier to get updates on how my kids our doing via Facebook rather than the phone. My sons’ teachers will often reach out on their lunch breaks via social media. It’s great for me because I can multitask. I can be on a conference call and at the same time talk to teachers online through Facebook Messenger. I highly recommend doing this if you are comfortable and your children’s teachers are OK with this communication method. It’s the way of today and definitely of the future.

momcomputer

6. Keep track of play dates by handing out business cards. Similar to scheduling a doctor or dentist appointment, I too hand out business cards when we have booked a play date for the kids. I created a business card template that includes all of my pertinent contact information including social media handles. Parents then can reach out to me on social media to update me about play date anytime they choose.

I hope some of these tips will help you and please feel free to share some of the ways tech helps you keep things together in your family!

How to Incorporate Mindfulness into your Daily Routine

Posted on October 17, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in The Best You, Urban Suburban Mommy .

Let’s face it. Being a mom is stressful. The good news is that there is something we can do to reduce the amount of stress that we experience in our lives – mindfulness and meditation.
JasonGarner.com

JasonGarner.com

You’re probably thinking that you don’t have time to sit around the house and meditate, but it doesn’t have to take a huge chunk of your time. In just a few minutes a day, you can incorporate mindfulness and meditation into your routine and watch the stress melt away.

We caught up with Jamie Price, wellness expert and co-founder of the award winning Stop, Breathe & Think meditation app who has created some awesome tips to achieve calm for all your Urban Suburban Mommies out there!

How to Incorporate Mindfulness into your Daily Routine

1. Schedule it. Set the alarm on your phone for a certain time each day. Then set the timer to customize it to your individual needs. Notice your thoughts, feelings and the sensations in your body. Pay attention to your breath as you breathe in and out.

2. Enjoy! Celebrate the fact that you are giving yourself some time to just be still. You deserve it.

3. Don’t be hard on yourself. You’re not going to be an expert meditator right away.  Instead of judging your experience, treat yourself with warmth and friendliness, and allow yourself to be present with whatever is happening, as imperfect as it may be.

4. Find creative ways to incorporate it into your day:

a. Stuck in traffic: Practice mindful breathing by taking a deep breath each time someone honks or the signal turns red.

b. Waiting in line at the grocery store: Notice your thoughts, feelings and the sensations in your body. Ask yourself: What am I feeling physically? What am I feeling mentally? What is the overall quality of my state of mind?

c. Take a mindful walk with your child. Pay attention to every detail. Use your five senses to bring awareness to everything around you. What do you see, hear, taste, smell and feel?

4. Download an app or tutorial to guide your through the process and to learn more mindfulness techniques.

Try to set realistic expectations, and always take a moment to appreciate whatever time you were able to spend meditating, and whatever benefits you feel, however small. With regular practice, mindfulness will have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing. Simple guided meditations can be found on the free app Stop, Breathe & Think.

Stop Breathe and Think APP

About Stop, Breathe & Think

The 5 star rated Stop, Breathe & Think app is paving the way to everyday emotional wellness. The award winning meditation app customizes content based on user emotions and has become a top ranked app for emotional health. Born out of the non-profit Tools For Peace, and launched in early 2014, Stop, Breathe & Think has garnered over 2M user downloads, 5M emotional check-ins and averages 200K MAUs. The app has won the People’s Voice Webby Award for Health & Fitness in April 2015.
