Old Downward Dog, New Tricks: How I’m Namastaying Active with Yoga

Posted on March 23, 2017 by Alexis Nicols Posted in Urban Suburban Mommy .

If you’ve read my previous posts, you know that 2016 wasn’t exactly my year. I won’t bore you with details from the dumpster fire that was my life, I will only say that 2017 brings new promises and better offerings.

About two months ago, I started doing yoga. Nothing spectacularly difficult, no stretching my legs behind my head or rooms so hot they could bake bread; just a weekly trip to the local community centre. The decision to participate in a physical activity went part and parcel with my new year’s decision to be more active, try something new and be mindful. As though my anxiety-crippled, hyper-driven mind was something I could turn off. I figured if I was going to be trapped in the fourth circle of cerebral hell, I might as well get some physical activity out of it.

I never played team sports. Ever. I wasn’t coordinated, athletic or particularly competitive, and nobody wanted to coach that kid. After being told repeatedly that I wasn’t any good at sports and being chosen last for every team (track and field days were and remain my idea of purest hell), I just stopped trying. I did, however, get very good at coming up with elaborate ways to get out of PhysEd. I refined the art of excuses, coming up with reasons why I shouldn’t move my body and get active, which is fine when you’re in your twenties and can lose 5 pounds just by thinking about it. When I reached my 40’s, I realized that:

  1. a) I had to get active not just for my sake, but for my two young boys, who could out-run a cheetah and re-define the Doppler effect.
  2. b) Muscle memory only occurs when you’ve used your muscles in the first place.

Yoga is hard. Apparently, Namaste is Hindu for “I’m going to calmly and gently kick your ass.” Who knew that holding poses named after nature and cute animals could cause you to break a sweat? Oh, and you have to breathe. I’m still working on that part. I may have passed out once or twice.

And so we circle back to mindfulness. Yoga forced me to be in my brain in such a way that I had to focus and pay attention. I had to compartmentalize my thoughts and be present. You cannot, just cannot do tree pose if your brain has already jumped ahead to the groceries you need to buy or remembering to call the dentist. The only times I didn’t wobble or fall over were when I was focused, breathing and listening. After just a few months I was calmer, writing more and, to be honest, yelling less.

I have no aspirations to become a career athlete. There are no bus tours to an ashram in my future. I may never lap my kids at the park, but at least my back no longer hurts when I pick them up. I’ve found a form of physical activity that doesn’t hand out ribbons or require sticks, balls or pucks. I may not always look forward to going, but I’m always glad I went. Namaste!

Set intentions and do something different this New Years

Posted on December 28, 2016 by venicealissia Posted in The Best You .

In the past I’ve never really felt the need or desire to set intentions for the upcoming year. Of course I’d do the usual run of the mill wishes to keep a healthy physical workout regime, be the best version of myself that I could be etc. But I never really dug that deep into my souls to set the intentions that could really make a difference in all aspects of my life. This year is different. I feel like there is almost an urgency to set the PERFECT intentions that will set me on the right foot, path that could potentially alter my life forever.

I am a single mom with two boys.  I have a partner with whom I share wonderful adventures with that holds a special place in my heart.  My life is filled with excitement, adventures, struggles, peace and happiness. It’s not perfect but it’s my life and I strive for happiness, passion, compassion and the most unique life for my boys.

As the new year rapidly approaches I find myself reflecting on my past, happy moments, sad moments my failures and accomplishments. Life is not suppose to be linear – there are twists and turns, bumps and hiccups.

All of which I try to embrace and seek peace and acceptance on the path that I had taken and now look to the future and the path in which I wish to forge.

This New Year’s Eve I wanted to experience something different than the usual over priced prix fixe NYE menu in an oversized venue that lacked intimacy.

I’ve decided to trade in my sequinned black dress and 6 inch heels for hiking boots and Patagonia gear:)

Of course in true Alissia style we’re still going to maintain a feminine and sensual touch to the look. I may be wearing fleece and gortex on the outside but my undergarments will still have a festive and cheeky flair.

As for NYE activity ideas – here are a few that will unlock the adventure enthusiast in you, your partner and the rest of the family:

  1. Acro yoga and rock climbing retreat in Joshua Tree.
  2. Surf trip with a few friends and family and head down south to Ensenada.
  3. Skiing/snowboarding at Blue Mountain, Whistler/Blackcomb, or Mammoth Mountain to name a few with the family then head in and sit by the fire as you prepare cheese fondue for your NYE’s feast!\

What’s your outlet

Posted on October 28, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in The Best You .
your outlet

If you want to survive parenting, then you definitely need an outlet or escape plan from time to time.  Otherwise – I promise you – you will either burn out, have a nervous breakdown or get divorced (if you’re married or are still married).  Yes, I am being extremely blunt. But it is the truth.  When your offspring contribute to your sleep deprivation or max out your patience, how do you handle diffusing your internal bomb before it goes off?

Yes, you need your outlet. Everyone must have one – or find one in a hurry.  Everyone is different; some people need exercise others turn to chocolate (OK – ignore that suggestion). Anyway, you know what I mean.  Here are some of my suggested outlets or releases in order to survive parenthood:

1. Yoga (or any physical exercise)

Honestly, pre-natal yoga lead me through a healthy pregnancy and delivery with my second.  I actually swear by it.  I felt mentally and physically strong and in shape.  You can do yoga anytime and anywhere – on your own or in a class.  Yoga is all about practice so do it often even if it is only for 10 minutes right before bed.  A good stretch and a sun salutation will keep you relaxed.

2. Take A Drive

Get into your car and drive… Just drive.

Focus on the road of course, but let yourself go by also enjoying the peace and quiet, and perhaps scenery around you. You do this on your own without the kids or else this won’t work.

3. Nap

Close your eyes for 15 minutes during the day.  If you have the luxury of working from home or being on mat/pat leave, you can – and must – schedule 15 minutes of snooze time a day.

I really try and follow my own advice on this one.  If you don’t have the luxury of being at home and at work at the same time, be creative.  My husband is – he naps on the train to and from work. Sometimes he even rides the subway on his lunch hour with no set destination but just to take a nap!  Make sure you have an iPod and ear buds for this one to be effective.

 4. Treat Yourself

Take yourself out for a tea or a mani/pedi – give yourself at least an hour of alone/me time if you are able.  You need to do this – don’t feel guilty about it either.

So what’s your outlet?  I try to employ all or some of my suggestions every day – right now I am going to focus on #3 because I’ll be up at 4:30am and that will be the extent of my nap!
