Talking to Sophie Nélisse

Posted on December 22, 2016 by Urban Suburban Mommy Posted in Urban Suburban Mommy .

There are some great books – stories that you just connect with. There are books on my shelf that I like to visit, like old friends. I’ve got a few of those from my childhood, and The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson is one of them.

I love the characters and the story. Do you remember it? If you need a refresher, grab the book off your shelf – or sit down and enjoy the movie!

Recently released by Search Engine Films, the film adaptation stars Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Julia Stiles, Octavia Spencer, Bill Cobbs and Sophie Nélisse as Gilly.

At 16, Nélisse is an award-winning seasoned actress. She took on the role of Gilly Hopkins and made the character come to life. If was fun to get a chance to sit down with this talented actress and hear about taking on a role of such a well known and well loved character.

“It was an amazing experience, an amazing cast,” Nélisse told me when I asked what it was like to work on this movie. “I love the character. I realize how fragile she is. You think she’s tough, but you realize it’s a front. I try not to judge people and understand what they’ve been through before judging them.”

Nélisse gave the character of Gilly some true dimension, and says that, instead of first reading the book, “I followed the script and followed the director,” and really connected to the story. It’s clear she did a fabulous job with the overwhelming emotion of the character.

While shooting in The US, she was happy to find that even though it was a large production, it was a small set so she could get to know the cast and crew. Working with big names, Nélisse hung out watching hockey with Glenn Close (who she loved from 101 Dalmatians) and found that her co-stars were all very down to earth – so that’s what it’s like to work those stars!

I asked Nélisse if anything funny happened to her on set, and with a laugh she told me the story about a dinner scene that actually took a whole day to shoot. Nélisse started out hungry, and so digging into the food was easy – she had to be eating in the scene. But it wasn’t long before she was full and it wasn’t so tasty. And after 8 to 10 hours of eating, she wasn’t feeling so well at all. “So many shots, so many angles!” she says, “By the end I had a spit bucket. I didn’t eat for 2 days.”

The hardest part of making a movie? “The saddest part was leaving and not seeing them,” she says of the cast and crew that had become close. But Nélisse is back at home in Montreal, going to school, hanging out with friends. Her friends just treat her like a normal person. She’s an incredibly talented but very well-adjusted young woman who has done a fair bit of growing up in front of the camera.

If you loved the book, you’re going to love Nélisse’s portrayal of Gilly, she does it justice. If you haven’t read the book – grab a copy, the movie is a must-see. It’s a perfect family movie and a great way to have a family movie night.

Another great getaway

Recently, my husband was on a job  out of town and had to spend two weeks living in a hotel. Not getting to see their dad nightly was hard on the boys. Dad’s hours are insanely long – he’s not a 9-to-5er and he’s only occasionally home for dinner during the week – but a whole 2 weeks with little more than a few Facetime sessions just wasn’t working for us.

Now we love a good hotel stay – and I’ve written about our staycations before – so the boys and I turned it into a good time. I was able to take some vacation time each Friday, and drive us out to spend some time together.

I did not have to make this bed

I can’t recommend staycations highly enough. You may think “Why on earth would I ever spend money on a room when I already have a home that I pay for, and it’s only a few miles away?”

Think about it differently. If you take a day off and spend it at home, do you really take a day off? Or do you use it to catch up on chores. Do you see the cobwebs in the corner and think “Wow, I have the time to take care of that!” Or get to the little reno/repair/redecorate project that you’ve been putting off. And at home, do the kids expect you to make dinner? Get them stuff? Are they feeling the fun?

Nope.

The Doubletree gave us cookies when we checked in (and then more cookies when we went late-night exploring)

Hotels don’t have to be expensive. Hotwire.com, Hotels.com, Trivago.ca, Expedia.ca – and a ton of others, from Groupon to WagJag have offers and deals galore. And you might be surprised to find that big cities and airport strips are especially full of empty rooms on weekends that no big events are taking place. They’d rather get something than nothing, and some of the deals I’ve enjoyed have been crazy. My best find was a 4-star hotel with breakfast, parking and free Internet for $72.

The fun of a hotel lays with the amenities. Room service. Breakfast in PJs. Late-night hotel exploring. Swimming pools. Games rooms. Having the whole family snuggling in front of one TV watching a movie – and many hotels have a movie service that offers movies still playing in theatres. A new release for a family of 4 $12 in the room as opposed to $50 at the theatre – what a steal! If you’re celebrating something and you let them know, they often offer you an upgrade or send a treat to your room. Even if you’re not celebrating, always ask about upgrades. If there really are a lot of vacancies they may try to win your love with a special suite. We’ve had huge jacuzzi rooms, double rooms, palatial rooms, dessert sent up and even wine brought to our room with the hotel’s compliments.

Just be nice.

And remember to tip.

Nobody expects you to make dinner. Nobody expects you to make a bed. Nobody expects anything! Turn off the cell phone, shut down the laptop and just relax, nobody can find you, nobody can bother you, and the kids are mesmerized by the different environment.

I love hotels. I always have – and they’re magical to kids. It’s fancy. It’s rich. It’s a treat-and-a-half. Remember jumping bed to bed, thinking that the complimentary soaps, potions and lotions were treasure, that having your parents’ full attention was the happiest time of your life?

Yep.

Staycate. Try it. It’s the most amazing family getaway because it’s easy, convenient and really requires no planning. In fact, we’ve had completely unplanned staycations where we’ve been out and decided to just find a room. There’s an app for that, you know. A quick stop for bathing suits and toothbrushes were all we needed. I would never say no.

Star Wars: The force awakens – mama approved for older kids

Posted on December 22, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Mommy Approved .

episode VII star wars the force awakens posterI don’t exactly know how many discussions I’ve had about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it’s a lot. Like, A LOT. “Have you seen it?” “Didi you take the kids?” “Did you love it?” And I can honestly say, J.J. Abrams, you blew my mind.

My husband is a huge Star Wars superfan. His tattoo doesn’t lie. So when the release date for presales came, he harassed me into tickets for the first opportunity we could see it. Of course, that meant prime-time, 1.45 pm at the best screen in the city. It was a 3D, DBOX, UltraAVX, ATMOS experience. (I’m not sure what all of those mean, but the seats jostled us, the sound was incredible and the Millennium Falcon seemed to warp right at us!)

The movie is a bit violent for the littles. There are some scenes that could be  a little bit terrifying for the sensitive kid. I’m really not entirely sure that it was appropriate for my 5 and 7 year old boys to go see it, but it was never open for discussion. The superfan had them watch the first 6 Star Wars movies – sequentially – for the day that rivalled Christmas in its excitement and intensity in our house: The release of episode VII, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Kylo Ren and First Order Troopers (Storm Troopers) 3-D glasses were the best.

On Star Wars Day (or December 19th, as you might know it) my husband had to work. He knew a few days before, and it was like someone had smashed the Christmas tree and his eggnog had curdled. Theatres were sold out. There were no great options left. But he insisted I take the boys. They needed to see it! One of our friends came with – it was a special day for him, he recalled in ’77 how his dad had taken him to see the original Star Wars. I realized then and there, it wasn’t just a movie, this was a memory, a rite of passage, an important moment for my boys.

And this is something only us 40-something parents will understand. We were the youngest group to be around to experience the original release in ’77. There may be younger superfans, but if you were born after the mid 70s, you won’t remember it on the big screen in 1977 or Empire in 1980 or Return of the Jedi in 1983.

As a happy ending to my superfan/husband’s plight, what can only be known as a true Christmas/Star Wars miracle, I won tickets from a local radio station for a VIP viewing the evening of the 19th  – a time he was able to go. And he noted that he knew The Force would take care of him. (Huge shout-out to Fred & Mel at 102.1 The Edge, you saved Christmas/Star Wars Day!)

***edited: just had to share the salaries of the actors in this movie HERE.
