Great Wolf Lodge – 10 insider tips for a howling fun stay!

Posted on December 13, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Bon Voyage, Mommy Approved .

Holiday Lodge - Great Wolf Lodge, Niagara Falls

Holiday Lodge – Great Wolf Lodge, Niagara Falls

We had a howling good time during our recent stay at Great Wolf Lodge. They were just getting ready for the holidays and had Santa and Mrs. Claus as special guests. They made it snow in the lodge!!!!

It’s really quite an unbelievable place, a hotel chain designed around making a child’s every vacation moment too good to be true. Brilliant really, it keeps the kids asking to come back, again and again.

Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I love Great Wolf Lodge just as much as the kids. First a bit about the place and why we go, then scroll down to the bottom to see the best insider tips for a great stay.

The basics:

Our trip last spring

Our trip last spring

Great Wolf Lodge has 14 locations, 13 in the United States and one location in the Honeymoon Capital of the World, Niagara Falls. Each hotel has a very similar set-up. Rooms are themed, some offering bunk beds, a fireplace and whirlpool tubs, it varies depending on the suite. They really are amazing!

Throughout the hotel there are animated forest animals that the kids can meet. There is a waterpark – each location is unique – but all have amazing waterslides, water playgrounds, wave pools, play pools, hot tubs and a lazy river.

magicquestThe hotel is also the setting for Magic Quest. All it takes is a wand and starting up a game, and each child can be turned into a Magi, following quests, hunting clues, waving wands, collecting digital gold and amassing runes to fight the dragon. The computer system keeps the games going and each visit your young Magi can add onto their previous progress.

There are also other funtimes, like bowling, mini-put, an arcade and a bunch of restaurants, as well as gift shops and lots of merchandise for the little ones to dig into!

Why we love the place:

Story Time

Story Time

The kids have the bet time. All of the activity helps them to sleep very well at night, but just to ensure this, the hotel does music and story time to help get the littles off to bed. They even offer a Cub Club, paid childcare to run your little muppet through some great activities and story time. Mommy and Daddy deserve some alone time in all of this crazy kid-centred fun (so I hear, we’ve yet to try it)!

They even offer an all-inclusive dining package. We like it. Breakfast, lunch and dinner without having to think about it. The food is quite decent and ultimately, though not cheap, offers decent value. It includes non-alcoholic drinks and tip. Where else can you let your kids roam around a hotel making friends and having high-volume fun while getting to stay in your pajamas or comfies all day. Seriously, flip-flops and fuzzy bunny slippers are the only footwear you need, because you never have to leave.

It's my vacation too. The private patios in the room are a great place to enjoy the view and have a break

It’s my vacation too. The private patios in the room are a great place to enjoy the view and have a break

We’ve gone at least twice a year for about 3 years now, and have learned a few tricks to a great deal and a great stay.

  1. One night is fun, it gives you waterpark passes for both the day of arrival and day of departure, but two nights is more optimal, three is our max. There’s just too much to do for a one-night stay and your kids can’t get enough of it.
  2. Join their newsletter mailing lists. They regularly send out discount codes. I wait until I get a 25% – 30% off code and then book. For the best savings, you should plan to book 2 – 3 months in advance.
  3. It’s not as expensive as it sounds. We usually upgrade to a themed suite so we’re not going for the cheapest room price, but even at $200/night, when you think, there are 2 days of waterpark passes for 4 people for the one night’s stay. If you consider a regular waterpark is at least $30/person admission, do the math and you can clearly see the value.
  4. Be nice. They’re super-accommodating, and the employees, from my experience, will always try to go the extra mile. It CAN NOT BE EASY to work there, yet everyone is so nice. The kids yelling, the kids going crazy, the lights and sounds and activity of the Magic Quest, the costumes, the events, the waterpark and the weekend kids’ dance parties… It’s quite a ‘special’ work environment, and requires a special kind of employee.
  5. Paw Passes are great for the first visit, but may not offer you value if you’re only staying one night. And they’re not so simple to share between your kids so they can get expensive. But they’re a treat, so check first if you’re planning on doing and buying a few of the things included in the Paw Pass because there’s extremely good value if you’re planning to do a lot of Great Wolf Lodge’s activities.
  6. The rooms have fridges and microwaves with a little bar skink – like a little kitchenette set-up. Bring your own cocktails, snacks and food. We do the inclusive meal package one night and have a quiet pizza night the other. If you have dietary restrictions or just want to keep costs down, bring your own food and eat in your room. It’s totally do-able.
  7. While I don’t drink much – or often – around my kids, it’s my vacation too. The Niagara falls location (and possibly others) is completely licensed, so, when you leave the restaurant they will put your adult beverage in a to-go cup and you can take it with you throughout the resort. Ditto for your morning coffee! If you bring your own alcohol with, keep it in travel cups, don’t go carrying wine glasses and beer bottles through the hotel, the kids will catch on that you’re having your own kind of fun, and you know how that goes!
  8. Have a credit card with available funds on it so that you can have your wristband connected to your credit card, that way you never need to carry money. The wristband is your waterpark pass, your hotel room key and your spending account. I wish I had one of these for the rest of my life.
  9. On check-out day, if you want to stay at the waterpark past 11am (check-out time) you should get a locker. They’re cheap and convenient and hold a fair amount of stuff. They can put your luggage in storage for the day. I don’t ever feel good about leaving my stuff in our van in a parking lot all day.
  10. Have fun. Seriously, give it all a try. The only thing that bothers me is that they didn’t have anything like this when I was a kid!

After so many trips to Great Wolf Lodge, I still haven’t had my fill. We just went a couple of weeks ago and we’re already looking forward to returning. If you’ve got any Great Wolf questions, just hit us up, and we’ll give you our Urban Suburban Mommy-approved insight. It really is a howling good time.

Top 5 host gifts – according to Urban Suburban Daddy

Posted on December 2, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Mommy Approved, Urban Suburban Daddy .

urban suburban daddy headphonesOur Urban Suburban Daddy is onto something here. Usually it’s a ‘Hostess Gift’ and it’s either something for the home or something with a feminine touch – flowers, wine, candles… Yes, we love these things, and it’s too true, Dad usually isn’t the one bringing the homemade pie to the neighbour’s holiday party. But since our Urban Suburban Daddy is quite the socialite, accepting invites far and wide, we asked him what he thought would be the coolest host gift if he were laying out the spread at our house.

What he wants:

1. Wine, Alcohol or Beer (why am I not surprised) Gift Basket

Nobody’s shocked at this one, it’s a pretty typical answer. Think outside the wine box – we suggest curating a themed gift of spirits, ales or wine.

Try this: Buy an ice bucket, select 5 or 6 flavoured, international beers such as Friuli (Strawberry beer from Belgium) or Wells Banana Bread Beer (UK). Place the beer inside the bucket, wrap with cellophane and a bow. You could do the same with red wines for example or little bottles of vodka.

2. Recipe Book

Our Urban Suburban Daddy is a budding foodie, and has finally admitted he’d like to be able to cook as well as some of those chefs we make him (like we have to twist his arm!) watch. One of his picks is from the selection of Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks. Feel free to inscribe it and mark off the recipe you want him to make the next time you come for dinner.

3. Barbecue Grilling Set

You can pick up a Barbecue Grilling Set at a department or big box store. Have a look at this great set from BergHoff. You can even get creative with the theme and combine gifts numbers 2 and 3, just grab a grilling recipe books such as Bobby Flay’s Grill It (an oldie but a goodie) and pair it with a Barbecue Grill Set.

4. Hot Sauce, Flavour-Makers & Jams

Like the hopped up gift basket suggested above, our Urban Suburban Daddy thinks it would be very cool to be on the receiving end of a selection of delectable and different hot sauce, rubs, marinades and even jams.

5. Play List

Our Urban Suburban Daddy is a DJ by night, so the perfect gift for him is music. It’s also one of those great personal gifts. With the help of iTunes you can make your own playlist and present a USB stick full of awesome music for the holiday party or burn a CD if you’re old school like that. We are crushing on Drake and The Weekend right now – who doesn’t love a little Hotline Bling? Another suggestion is to go the old fashion route and pick up a copy of a CD – Adele is smoking hot this holiday! (And gratuitous video because you know you can’t get enough – we can’t either!) [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQHsXMglC9A&w=560&h=315]

What’s your beat? Bring it to the party!

App App App App

Posted on November 18, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Mommy Approved .
urban suburban apps

We don’t know how our mothers did it, but we can’t imagine a world without apps. What’s on your homescreen? In no particular order, here are a few of our faves!

Suburban Mommy Michelle tells it:

1. SONGZA

It’s free, which is awesome. The app actually curates playlists for you according to mood, genre or what you are doing like “Driving” or “Entering Beast Mode” (yikes, that one scares me). You can also search for your favourite artist. So, for example, I feel like breathing in a zen moment. I can quickly search for New Age Music or Enya or Dido – you name it – it’s there. But what I love the most is that there is also music to calm my 4-month old baby. This app is super handy when you are sick of sshhhing. Of course my 4 year old can rock out to Bruno Mars whenever he chooses.

2. FLIPP

Who doesn’t want to stay organized and save a buck at the same time. I absolutely love the FLIPP APP and it is perfect for moms who dig price matching. You can either search a product such as toilet paper or a brand name such as Charmin. Once you search, the app will show you all sales (if there are any during your chosen week) for this particular product or brand. You then select the grocery store or department store that has the best deal. Click on the item. A circle will appear around the item so you know that you have marked it and it is automatically saved to your clippings. You can then show the cashier at the checkout. They recently added a feature called Coupon and it helps with additional savings while shopping. When you search for a product or brand, if coupons are available they will appear. You then need to print the coupons and bring them with you on your grocery excursion. I highly recommend.

3. WHATSAPP

I love WhatsAPP – it isn’t a new app but I find that it’s the best free and instant messaging program for both android and apple. You can share pics, shoot video and even record audio vs. typing. I often record sweet audio messages from my son to his dad and send. My little guy particularly loves hearing the audio messages that he receives back from his dad (good night messages or be home messages or have a good day messages). Whatsapp is far better than texting because you don’t get charged from your phone carrier when you send pics – huge savings for this household!

Urban Mommy Elisa tells it:

1. Starbucks

What can I say? I’m addicted to decaf coffee. Once you stop laughing, hear me out. It’s always consistent, I can pay with the app, I get rewards and deals and free coffee just for using the app – they even treat you to a freebie on your birthday (and for other random reasons). And sometimes free wifi is all you really need so  you can sit down at your computer/iPad and get something done. With a latte.

2. Uber

I always loved taking cabs but Uber has it dialled in at a whole new level. I love being able to see my car close in. I love driving around in the car of my choosing. I love being driven around – and this is really very much an ‘urban thing’ but from avoiding the frustration of traffic, to knowing that parking and gas will cost more than cabfare, being driven around is the best!

3. Voicemail Santa

This one lets you leave voicemails for Santa. My boys love it – and it’s very important this time of year – though it works all year long! When they do something great I ask them if they want to call Santa to tell him and add themselves to the Good List. And when they’re acting insane, sometimes my little one asks if he can call Santa and apologize. It’s adorable.

The voice is done well and sounds the way you feel Santa should sound, and the message is super cute. It has prompts: Press 1 to add someone to the Nice List, Press 2 to add someone to the Naughty List. Press 3 to leave a general message or present request. It’s all very fun for children, and oh, so innocent. When you need to know what’s on your kids’ wish lists just get them to call it in to Santa – and listen in!

I love Shazam, Dropbox, CNN, Calendar, C25K, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, e-bay, Bubblewrap and Find my iPhone, too. I couldn’t live without my apps. Nope, couldn’t.

Toy testers – boy approved!

Posted on November 4, 2015 by urbansuburbanmommy Posted in Mommy Approved .
toy testers

I’m not your typical big box store shopper. I live downtown, I like to fancy myself the urbanite who shops local and can walk to the store within a few blocks for all of my needs. We have some pretty amazing local stores, including toy stores. But I’m also not anti-big box stores. Cheap stuff, en masse, has its appeal too. I have a car and I know how to use it when the need arises.

So my middle-of-the-road approach to life and commerce heard about Walmart Toy Testing this past summer. “A morning spent playing with new toys?” I said to myself, “What a great idea!”

We registered, and my boys were among the lucky 600 families chosen!

toy testing

Now I don’t know if it appeals, but keep your eye out early July, that’s when Walmart puts out the call. In fact, Urban Suburban Mommy will bring you the announcement. I promise.

Meanwhile, my boys spent 2 hours playing with drones, NERF guns, LEGO, Monster High Dolls, blow-up toys, robot cats, art supplies, action figures, educational games and a few things that I would NEVER EVER EVER allow in my house.

boys flying drones

I think that Walmart did it right. They really let the kids go to town. They had an app and wifi so that parents could easily rate and rank their kids’ experiences, likes, dislikes and opinions about pricing. Walmart has just released their Top 20 toys for the holidays, and I think they did a great job. These are kid-tested and kid-approved – by my kids!

I wouldn’t necessarily buy everything on Walmart’s Top 20 list, but I’m not offended.  I never know what to buy other people’s children, but having seen them at play, I’d put some stock into picking off of the Top 20 list.

Unless you’ve got any better ideas? I’d love to hear your suggestions for this year’s hottest holiday gifts for kids – care to share?
